My 48 is almost on the road. Just working out some clutch fitment issues. 250 inline 6, Saginaw 4 speed, Clifford 4bbl intake, split headers, 4" dropped axle, 4" blocks, Firestone Deluxe biasply. Hope to have it on the road before the end of 2022!

I bought a set of Halibrands for my old truck that I have drove for over 30 years. I am in the process of a major update. I originally built this truck on a very tight budget. So far I have completely revised the tilt front end. New paint scheme is in the works. This winter I will change to a completely new fuel system.

We're slowly getting roadworthy after 6 years sitting. A couple very good friends put it together for me ... HPIM5870.JPG HPIM5919.JPG HPIM5920.JPG HPIM5875.JPG HPIM5873.JPG

So Cal Chevy truck getting a tune

    Hello,

While I was driving to a specific shop in inland, central Orange County, I saw this Chevy truck getting some love and care. The color was noticeable from afar distance and the color was nicely offset from the chrome wheels. But, the one thing is, that there are a lot of pickup trucks in So Cal. This one had a cool lowered stance and road gripping mode, while getting some attention.

It instantly reminded me of my first hot rod truck for a photo assignment. I saw this cool Chevrolet Truck in a beach community parking lot in the big OC many years ago. It stood out due to the bright color on the truck. Tahitian Red was the color and among the whites, blacks and grey cars in the lot, it was like night and day.

So, I shot a few photos and soon, the owner came by. We got to discussing the aspects of the truck, his build stuff and the whys/hows of the finished project. He had time, so, we drove to a cliffside beach location for some photos I thought would be great to take to the local magazines for a photo story. Cool, well done truck, great location, nice shiny day and no rush to get some good photos.

The owner was from Long Beach and this Chevy truck was his first attempt at making a cool daily use and possible show entry hot rod. He was proud of his work.

I had enough good photos, written facts about the owner and build, as well as the location shots. So I went home to write a nice story to go along with the photos. The faster I could get the facts down, the better the story goes.

When I presented the story and photos, the editors were impressed. But, at the time, roadsters, T-buckets and coupes were the main emphasis. These cool old trucks were usually in custom car magazines and separated from the hot rod style cars.

So, as nice as the package deal with the story and photos, they declined.

I was so irritated, that I gave the owner all of the color slides and black and white photos. Since it was a barrier to getting them published, it was my way to thank the owner for his time and effort. But, the magazine story and photos were saved until they eventually disappeared over the many moves from apartment to apartment to a several houses. But, the cool Chevrolet Truck will go down as my first sighting and story… However disastrous the result…YRMV

Built this for my wife. She got tired waiting for me to finish and after driving it once said to sell it. I think it's now in Arizona.

Not sure what you mean here. Why would you need to replace the crown of the roof? I know when you chop one that the front posts no longer line up....and people either lean the posts back or cut across the roof and add a strip if they want the original angle.

I picked up an old cab thats gutted and has no floor....but has a good roof. Thinking about cutting it so I can install the front part of the roof in place of the front part of the other roof. I can cut it slightly longer than the original front and it should match perfectly and keep the original windshield angle.

    Hello,

This photo was one of the most attractive photos in a long time. The color was as natural as they come in photography. When we were driving by this particular road trip in South Orange County, we had just come from Balboa Island and the surrounding places. My wife saw the Orange panel van first and said as calmly as possible, “There is a nice hot rod van on the side of the road…” Before she could finish, I saw a glimpse of the bright Orange paint. So, now I was fully emersed in taking a photo or two.

It was apropos for the GMC Panel Van to be sitting on this highway. It was close to the major intersection that had a ton of history in the hot rod/cruising world in So Cal. The top right corner of the photo below shows a curve to the right. That will lead to the PCH Highway 101 or Highway 1 as the information is listed.

That corner is/was the place for the famous Merle’s Drive-In Restaurant from back in the 1950s into its oblivion era. It was the hot spot for most activity not taking place on the sandy beaches in this area. If you drove a hot rod or cruiser or even a family sedan full of teenage girls, it was the place to be seen and heard.

This open space photo is like a dream. This intersection is one of the busiest in the whole area. The area is now packed full of office buildings, one of the largest outdoor shopping centers, ocean/bay view resort hotels, with plenty of homes, apartments and condominiums, too. Not the same as the 1950-60s, but what is?

So, this location was historic in a sense and the hot rod panel van showed a ton of class in the very detailed build. It also stood out for miles once we started going in our own continued direction. It must have sold fast as the following week we also came back to the location as it was near one of our favorite garden shops. Good price for a good build works every time. Unless of course, it drove back to Montana after a week/month vacation in South Orange County. The big OC…

Currently, another restaurant is now on same site, (yellow outline) but not a drive-in restaurant.

Update: I posted pictures of a couple previously owned AD’s on page 2 of this thread. I sold the light blue one at the Frogfollies in 1998. I located it and bought it back three weeks ago after 24 years. I drove it home. I still have the D-200s Americans which will go back on it. Hoses, belts, tires and a little chip repair before next season. 77313748-3117-4438-B28D-7693076458D5.jpeg BB674368-DFED-4BA9-B5AA-B82BA9205DFC.jpeg 776FD597-959E-4E41-8E39-27ACB7655568.jpeg
