Does anyone know if any low spark plug location heads and rocker covers survived the R&D scrap pile?
Note plug location adjacent to firewall.

    If that's M.T.........
He casted his own heads for the Cammer, similar to the Chrysler w/ plug location in the center of the chambers. Is this another variation?

Vague resemblance, wasn't sure. Interesting question.

302 experimental SOHC that was to go into NASCAR racing. The plugs are reconfigured to the bottom of the head, where as the later SOHC was located close to the intake.

    Ray Brock.
Even though France barred the SOHC V8 from NASCAR competition, Ford proceeded to develop the engine anyway, hoping to change Big Bill’s mind. In May of 1964, a ’64 Galaxie hardtop with a Cammer V8 installed was parked behind Gasoline Alley at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the assembled press corps could get a good look at it. Here’s Ray Brock, publisher of Hot Rod magazine, eyeballing the setup. Note the spark plug location at the bottom edge of the valve cover on this early version of the SOHC V8.

Thanks for the link, Denny :) That air breather set-up on the following pic is pretty futuristic. Have never seen that one before.

  10. That's a standard-for-the-time NASCAR cold air induction air cleaner (and I think they may still use these). They re-purposed the heater intake at the base of the windshield (a high pressure area) and connected it to the air cleaner.

  11. Some great reading there, @DDDenny. Thanks for that link..............Don.

Thanks, Steve! I'm not a roundy-round guy (obviously) :D Knew they've been using cowl induction for quite some time but didn't know it existed in '64. Wonder who initially came up with the concept for circle track racing? The Ford teardrop hood scoop in '64 was introduced to vent hot air, induction through the hoses from the headlight buckets.

Something else I never noticed before is some of the rocker covers had the Ford script, engine size and some were plain, just the ribbing. I guess the earlier version were the plain ones?

Just thinking, FoMoCo may have been being very discreet at the time to appease France. Plain-Jane covers, plug location,...like, this obviously isn't a Chrysler hemi, doesn't make much power :D

One of the links I posted mentioned a pair of Mercury Cougar specific SOHC rocker covers that Don Nicholson had, got to be as rare as chicken lips.

The photo shows a ‘63 Impala with the Z-11 427, Chevrolet also had cowl induction on the ‘63 Mystery Motor Impalas in the Daytona 500.

Cool, that takes us back another year, 1963. Interesting to see these early innovations when the light bulbs were flickering in these guys' heads. Like, 'keeps my feet cool in the Summertime, hmmm'........

Back to the Cammers we go....:D

Ford built a 255 cid DOHC engine for Indy in '63. The new 260 small block design was gaining traction quickly in the racing community. High revving baby Cammer!

Id like to have the SOHC service manual. Sure would make a great coffee table book.

  29. I sold my manual on ebay in the 2000's for $490. Back then, really good ones would bring $500. Not long after I sold mine, someone was counterfitting them and they were bringing around $150. Who ever had the license put a stop to that in a few months. :)
