There are 2 types of people,
those who own trucks
and those who borrow trucks.

5.
They are as traditional as the '58 Buicks turned into "gassers", or a fordor anything turned into a hot rod. It's a case of just using the raw materials available in a new fashion.
I still don't get why some people are so hung up on this arbitrary line of HAMB friendliness. A lot of shit that totally wouldn't or couldn't be done back in the day gets a pass here because it's bitchin. Then there's stuff that could've or was done back in the day that doesn't get a pass because it's not bitchin enough according to whoever.

To my eyes the later body style bobber trucks are usually a little too rat roddy but that doesn't mean they aren't cool or couldn't have been done or weren't done back in the day. You think it took until 1990 for someone to figure out they could pull the fenders off a 49 truck and drop it? Hell no.

And so what? You wanna run off a dude that built a really cool bobber just the way it could've been done in 1959 just because you've never seen a black and white photo of one? You gonna apologize when someone digs up a period photo of one? Doubt it...

That never happened. All fake photoshop stuff planted by the anti four doors are parts cars alliance (A.F.D.A.P.C.A.)trying to infiltrate the traditional 2 door only factual reality.

Just because something was done once or twice doesn't make it a tradition.

If you want to throw up in your mouth, I can show you a pic of a highboy 32 roadster taken in the fifties, and it has an independent front suspension. Not something we want to keep on doing, is it?

10. A funny thing about the HAMB is that “traditional “ is such a fluid term. I always know what a hot rod is, but the definition here could be a rusty rat rod or some kind of “art car” . IMO, a post 1936 “bobber” is a rat rod. But, having been on here since the first page was an American mag I have seen the HAMB change. So, since those turds are much loved here, they are “HAMB friendly “.
I have spoken.

1950s engineered IFS on a legit 1950s built hot rod is a different topic from a Mustang II axled street rod. This is what I'm talking about... if that car still existed today and a HAMB member bought it, would he get chased off? Would it get a special pass for survivorship status? Would replicating it be OK or would that be crossing the line? Would the whole conversation be different if that car kicked ass on a race track and had some notoriety attached to it?

How is that not OK but this other dude's Model A 4 banger with a CNC-milled modern OHV conversion and modern supercharger, which could not by any stretch of the imagination be replicated with HAMB friendly equipment or methods, is fine here? Not a jab at that guy. That engine is sweet as fuck. It presents well and has the right attitude... as hard as that is to pin down.

Since I posted the shot of my son’s ‘38 while in primer I am not sure about the “post 1936”comment. I assure you this is anything but a r-rod. Now painted and finished it is certainly not welcome by the local r-rod crowd. We have a laugh when some makes a r-rod comment as now it seems to include any non-fendered hot rod.

17. If ya do a search for “bobber” you’ll notice 4 things.
1. this place use to have motorcycle threads. Even foreign bikes. Didn’t know that
2. most threads are shut down
3. nothing has changed since the “Rudy” truck. You either like it or hate it.
4. any truck with a short bed and no fenders past 34 isn’t “traditional”

Sometime ya learn something using that search function.
But this one sure looks interesting

wonder the build date for this creation

That's what I was thinking, too. I joined this forum when there were less than 6000 users and this is the first time I've ever heard of the term "bobber truck" applied to anything 1934 or older.

This is how I feel, too. There were a small handful done in the day (not necessarily "tradition" but certainly "period-possible"), I've seen a few recent builds that had nice proportions and looked decent. They're not for me, but if someone wants to take on what's left of some ton-and-a-half dump truck from the farm and build one I say go for it.

20. I’ll never buy the “4 doors weren’t used as hot rods” crap, but......is a hot rod truck with no fenders and a shortened bed a”bobber” or just a hot rod truck. Definitely a lot of pre-35 examples. Seems a couple 35-37 ish ones were built.
Gets a little harder past that. As far as the OP’s suggestion for post war versions, well, someone may have some pics but I’d bet the odds are rather slim.
Bobber, for a truck is a modern term. Just like rat rod. Both can get confused with vintage builds.

Hotrod Pickups many times are argued as non Traditional so Hokey Ass and an influential part of the big picture I'm good with it...I often mention the Hotrod/Custom Rivalries and disagreements...But this ones solely amongst the Hotrod Crowd and there were many lone wolfs out there because of it but the pictures do assist where ignorance tries to deny any evolution in variations in Hotrod Trucks occurred...

RoadsterPickupRacer.JPG

I believe this Roaring Roadster PU is proudly part of the dot connectors to Hotrod...did he get razzed, maybe, it wasn't all wine and rose's back then either...

I guess to the OP question they'd be a Hokey Ass Forum entry and always garner flack from the naysayers period...regardless of being part of the big picture and how they evolved...and what they were called...

Great example and a later cab to boot...anybody eagle eye that cab...37/38 heck maybe its a 1940 International Cab...

The evolution of...without a doubt...In many ways the Periods of this style are quite similar to the Highboys as when the Fat Fenders and Boxy styling came around fenderless trends changed and became much rarer as the formula was skewed...

And the OP does interestingly mention 48 and any wild fenderless attempts post 48 seemed more in a Custom direction than Hotrod...this however was not necessarily the aim of the builders I'm sure but again is speculative...

Oh and Bobber Bikes to boot...

rgnl_drag_065.jpg

There's every chance that word was being tossed around and what were bobber bikes defined by...modded and removed fenders...hmmm

Is that a 57 T-Bird behind...
