Do you completely lose the effects? Or are they just subdued? I've got to pull the trigger on my paint and was really wanting a matte finish but I can't decide....
You do understand that matte clear has to be sprayed perfectly as there is no easy way to fix runs, dust or orange peel? Not trying to be mean but metallic, pearl and matt clear on what sounds like your first paint job has disaster written all over it.
You will lose most if not all the effect of Metalflake and pearl with matte clear. Do yourself a favor and please make it shiny
Pearl and metal flake will look like ass with Matt clear over them. They need the clear gloss to make them shine through.
Not my first time painting....first time doing a FULL vehicle that has been completely taken down to bare metal. By no means a professional, but I've painted quite a few pieces. Some for myself, some for others. That's usually a little filler, sealer, high build, and then base and clear.....coming off the shelf from my local NAPA. Here is some metallic I laid ....
Have 1' x 2' panels made and spray out the colors and clear your thinking about. It's the only way to find the effect you want.
Good Idea... This is the look I want to recreate. Problem is I can't get my hands on one. I've seen them in person and they appear to have really fine flake in them...
I used this in my base coat with a flat clear.. It sparkles thru, Got the look I was wanting. PEARLS FORGET ABOUT IT ! They are for shiny paint.
With as many coats of clear as it takes to smooth out metal flake and the fact that you usually spray several, sand and spray several more and cut and buff I think you would end up with a mess as the others said.
Here’s a few closeups of the white on my Bubbletop the futurian. It has silver and violet pearls and gold and silver mini flake. Hard to capture in a picture but it looks great especially in the sun. When the car was sanded to 1000 grit after clearing (simulating matte clear) in preparation for buffing it jut looked like a dirty white car. There was no effect at all. (it is hard to get a good picture of this)
Maybe its just me but it looks like it needs to be buffed out to a final shine. When I see matte I wonder "What are you hiding"?
I also prefer shiny. I saved this pic because it was the only matte paint job I've ever liked the look of. I sometimes paint things besides cars.
My Dodge is painted with Blue Pearl, outside is matte clear, inside normal clear. No pearl effect on the outside.
