Twice rescheduled due to the Caldor wild fire, attendance was held down due to the chance of much needed rain. Thankfully the rain waited until after the show. I was just thinking it’s been a good 20 years since I’ve been in Placerville. Can’t recall where we used to stop for a bite, kinda recall steps going up to the place where the steps were made off the side of a hill.
    Nice town there.

Myself and wife went through Placerville many years ago and it was agreat little town with lots of gold mining history. A shame there wasn't a car show on when we came through.

I born and raised just up the road (50), graduated from EDHS in '85, when cruising was still a thing. That main drag from the bell tower (and what used to be a movie theatre) to what used to be Beano's was full of late '60s and early '70s cars, when they were still affordable, gas was $0.79/gallon, burgers came in styrofoam containers, and speakers were boxes bolted to your package tray. Placerville had a great cruising scene, and the police were actually pretty cool about things, letting kids park their cars in parking lots with everybody's radio turned to the same station (back then it was KZAP out of Sacramento) and just hanging out/dancing and laughing. If we had the money and inclination, Sacramento was about an hour away, and Sunrise Drive was THE cruise, with Sunrise Mall, Tower of Records, and Tower of Posters really popular parking lots. Lots of slotted mags, Cragars, Keystones, and Centerlines in those days.

Those days solidified my love of car things. That area was a great place to grow up.

It's...sad to see all those boutique stores in those pictures, where real stores used to be. The stationery store, Placerville Hardware (still had the wood floors back then from the 1800s), Benjamin Franklin where we got our Scout uniforms, Aryan's Surplus where we got our cammies (required cool in school back then!). There were a couple of hot rods back then but nothing like there is now, judging by these wonderful pictures. Used to be a great machine shop out in Diamond Springs that none of us kids could afford, and Gilly's Radiator (next to Gilly's Auto Wreckers) was a place I spent much time in as a teen, trying to keep my old rattletrap Mustang together, back when they would let you out into the yard yourself to look for parts. The fairgrounds have/had? a really popular dirt track back then we all just called Hangtown Speedway, and it was a popular Saturday night destination for us gearheads.

great pics - Thanks -- never take going to a show for granted. last week my wife and I flew to San Diego. were going to a couple of car shows, visit family, etc. on the 7th she tripped on a speed berm in a parking lot. broken shoulder, sprained wrist, black eye, etc. had to drive back to Nor-Cal, could not fly. Take care out there.

That's a shame! Things can certainly sneak up on you at any time. I'm wishing you both the best.

Great Pictures, Thanks! So good to see so many classic local cars amongst the Flatlander's wares. The whole Mother Lode was a cool place with a really interesting car scene until the wine crowd moved in. Most of the cars were only cars/trucks that lived outside and were driven year round. Everyone had a set of wheels with snow tires ready for the fall. It was always fun to see the vintage Jeeps come out for deer season & winter. Every pickup had a gun rack in use. :)

  28. Thanks for the pics - looked like a nice crowd - one of my favorite visits to the speedway was with my uncle's watching their buddy Frank's GMC powered Model A mix it up with those 55 Chevy's of the Kingsman's if I remember their names correctly - have that race program from the 60's some where.
