Technical Metal in oil pan

    I found a few slivers of steel in the oil strainer. They are magnetic. Should i pull all bearing caps? Maybe the bearing backing or journals are hosed.

    Or the cam is going flat. Pull the caps just to be sure.

  3. Could be the cam going or a lifter. Timing chain or gears. Hard to tell without even knowing what engine it is to properly diagnose.

    slivers are steel being peeled off something. cast iron would be tiny chips

    Hard to diagnose without at least a brand & year/size to start from, ya think??

    Its a 60's chevy 350. I am going to look at the cam and timing chain like you guys mentioned.

    350s didn’t eat cams so I would guess you might have a crank bearing ready to go. Take it apart you might have caught it in time before you spun one. Hey let us know what you find

    Because you mentioned 350 Gm, didn't mention knock, loss of power, check the thrust washer at the bottom of the distributor. You might discover it bumping up and wearing out the rotor as it wears away so pulling the cap and lifting the shaft up and down might show excess movement indicating wear.

    When you say spun bearings I guess you mean the backing plate when into the crank because the bearings itself is non ferrous like aluminum and copper. My slivers are hard steel.

    Take a look at #6 rod, with the cap removed. You can see the two bearing halves have stacked up and taken a ride ' round the journal. This left shavings in the pan like you showed.

    If your bearing is in that shape you wont be asking about some small metal shavings in the pan... but about the loud knocking noise in your motor

    Wrist pin retaining clips ? Internal oil pump gears ?

    Is the engine down on power and starting to run like shit? Has it ever been apart? Might be time for an exploratory surgery.
