Technical SBC fuel pump/oil leak

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 57 HEAP, Oct 7, 2021.

  1. Is it possible for the fuel pump to leak oil?

I have an oil leak "around" the fuel pump and it might be from the pump itself. I don't want to do this job twice, so if the pump could leak, what do I look for?

There is a threaded hole on the front of the block that goes into the fuel pump pushrod. It needs to have a short 3/8-16 bolt in it or oil will come out. And it’s possible that the two gaskets are bad. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a pump actually leak oil.

  5. Thanks all. I know about the bolt hole. I'll double check that, but I plugged it.

The pump can leak oil out one of the holes in the pump body itself.

Above reply is correct. There is a seal on the shaft of the diaphragm that will let it leak out the weep hole. If it is a screw together type pump you can buy kits to rebuild it.

  9. A screw type is what I have. Rebuild is a good idea, but I haven't any luck finding the proper kit.

Yes they do...……. just wish they would last longer.

Terrill Machine in Texas 254-893-2610. Should be a number stamped in the flange on the bottom left. Some had a small metal tag on them with the number.

Check your oil pan bolts, it might be coming from there.

  12. Thanks for the info Dennis.

    Pan bolts, check!

I had a 5 week old chrome leak big time. the seal inside the pump was not "staked " to the pump casting . i checked another brand and it was.. so much for "speed equipment".

HI-Yeah I have seen a fuel pump leak oil out the small vent hole in the pump-not common but can happen.
