1. Prior to 1954, the unique number assigned to a motor vehicle was called a Serial Number. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) was standardized in 1981 to the current 17 digit style. I'm going out on a limb and assume that you are looking at a car that doesn't have a title and are hunting for the last owner to try and get one. If the car comes with a clear title and isn't some historically special vehicle who besides a total flake gives a rats as who owned it last?
Had to update my decode post. '68' is a Galaxie 500 XL 2dr fastback ht. For the record, 50-series is Custom/Custom 500 2- and 4-door sedans, 60-series is Galaxie 500 of all models (bench seat) except wagons, 70-series are wagons, and 80-series are Galaxie 500 XLs (hardtops and convertible) with bucket seats and console. Summbitch, I'd take that car in a heartbeat (even though I prefer '63s)! Now what's the days plate codes for the color, interior, axle and transmission?
