Went to a swap meet in Dayton Tennessee today. It was put on by Tommy Lee Byrd. It was a good turnout. As usual I found some buys. If you get a chance I highly recommend it next year.

Well I got a little ambitious today and messed with the corvette. Started getting the engine ready to pull. Here’s a few pics. The heads are mismatched. I know that it was never pulled apart while dad had it. If any of you guys can decode this I would appreciate it.

 

I decoded it and I come up with 327 small block Chevy out of a 66 corvette of course I could be wrong but I doubt it as every 327 I have ever found came out of a 66 corvette lmao good to see your working on it again best of all being excited to work on it again good luck enloe

 

I have to assume wrenchbender used some generic listing to decode as the "870" block was used from the beginning of the 1962 model year to the end of the 1965 model year. It was replaced for the 1966 model year with the "174" casting which was a one year only block. So it is not a 1966 Corvette block. It did start life as a 327 but in this case a '63 Corvette with Fuel Injection. The car it came from had the VIN 308_7S 110712. The engine was cast at the Saginaw MI. Central Foundry. Shipped about 40 miles to Flint Assembly where it was machined, assembled and test run on February 21 1963. Then shipped to St. Louis Missouri where it met up with a chassis and assembled into car VIN # 308_7S110712.

I don't recognize the heads. But the 3973487 head is from something built in 1971. It was cast in Tonawanda NY assembled April 27th 1971, D 27 71. This head was used in '71-2 and came in two versions, 1.94s and 2.02s. You will have to pull it to find out.

I am having trouble reading the casting number on the other head. I don't see a casting date for it. It is from something lo horse and much earlier than '66.

A casting date from the block would substantiate my 1963 claim.

P.S. RF is 360 horse 327 with Fuel Injection manual trans in a Corvette.

I had to edit my comments for type-O's and out right errors. I missed the the second digit in the year designator of the 3973487 head taking it as a single digit as Flint did it. While it is a 2 digit year designator. The way Tonawanda did it. Further putting my foot in my mouth as the 3973487 was in use in '67. Not until '71-2.

The other mystery head is shrouded in maybe's. It may be a 10-30 series truck head. It may be a 307 head. it may be of the 1970's vintage. I have very little valid heavy truck data and am very reluctant to speculate. The internet is full of that.

 

Rumblegutz I don’t have any decoding info whatsoever on this engine I was merely being a bit sarcastic you however have good info and I’m sure enloe will appreciate knowing exactly what it is is thanks for your info because I definitely learned something today

WHAT i see is that its all mismatched parts, really don't need to waste time rebuilding it or the car. Probably just need to sell it.Did i mention how much i want a vette??? Better get with it ,season is here!!!
