I snagged this photo off of FB, shot by Jim Stainer. He and his wife recently bought a '40 MorDor that is pretty dang rough, but he and Sharon were having a blast. Goes to show that the motto "The FUN is in the RUN" is true no matter what level of finish your hot rod is.

Featured in this photo is my coupe leading the pack, Joe Gaddy's slick '40 standard (with 39 trim), Dale Caulfield's @Weedburner 40 , and @dwollam Dave and Florence Wollam's super cool '40 standard sedan. Dave's '40 is EXACTLY the kind of '40 sedan I would love to own. Just enough wear on it, a killer 286ci 8BA with early Offy heads, and pretty much stock from there (other than it's new F100 front brakes).

  8. Thanks for a Great time. I don’t go to car shows for trophies, I just like the driving and the visiting part.

But, I was honored to receive a trophy from Robert this past weekend.
    Thanks Robert and Bret!

Funny story, after Robert presented the trophy to me, I asked if he would like to have his mom take a picture of him in the pickup. Heck yes he said. So he got in and my wife asked his friend if he would like to sit in her seat, of course. After the pictures were taken they both rolled up the windows so we couldn’t get in. The door outside door handles are shaved. His mom was in a panic, I told her I had a another way to get in. I opened the doors and they looked defeated. No joy ride today.

  9. SO cool. So for those of you who weren't there, Robert and his buddy both have Down Syndrome. Some of my favorite photos from Robert's "Car Show & Birthday Bash" events (which I told his mom to consider the Midwest Forty Ford Events to be part of), are photos of Robert and his buddy sitting in peoples cars. One year, pre-40 Ford event, one guy drove a vette with T-tops that the boys sat in. There's a pic of them giving each other a high 5 through the t-tops, both with big smiles on their faces.

I didn't see who all took home Robert's trophies, but his mother was super excited to find those spark plug trophies. I think they turned out really cool.

I'm with Woodie great event ,great people, I was ready but the 40 had a couple hiccups still searching, eliminating possible causes .
I surely missed being there and hanging out with Brett,Dale and all the others I had good conversations with and of course seeing all those good lookin cool40s and other hot rods in one place .

  17. Thanks, Steve. I told you that you and Patty were more than welcome to come down in your late model pickup so we could hang out with you. Hope you can make it over to the Gathering at the Roc.

  18. OH...while you guys are still interested in this thread, I have set a date for the 3rd Annual Midwest Forty Ford Gathering. It will be September 17, 2022. I had to move it forward a week due to a wedding I have to attend to next year.

  19. Thanks for the heads up!

  20. Thank you! No question about how graceful the 40's lines are. One of Ford's master pieces. :)

I and my High School friend Jonny both had a great time again this year. I was a bit sad that a few folks I was looking forward to seeing again could not make it, but that did give me more time to get to know some people that I didn't really get to chat with last year.

For anyone on the fence about coming to this next year, DO IT! Bret puts on a great, casual event that combines a very nice show with a scenic 30-ish mile cruise down there from Springfield. Not an ego-fest, but rather a gathering of good folks with similar interests. And the hang-out in the motel parking lot on Friday night is an event in itself!

As a side note, after getting to meet Dale and see what a great guy he is, there will definitely be some Weedetr items going on my car over the winter.

You're right Lyle, this is a great event. Fun all the way around. Make your plans now to attend next year if you are a 40 lover. You can count on me being there!!!

Doubt we could hang out in the mid west for a year to make the next years meet but we will surely miss not coming back. Leaving Illinois tomorrow and heading back to Missouri, then to OKC area, then down to Carlsbad Caverns, then start heading back to Oregon. We have been running the wheels off the '40 in Southern Illinois! Got to visit lots of relatives from all over. Will see more in the weeks to come heading west.

  24. Dave,

It was so cool to have you guys at the gathering. I said it before, but your forty is EXACTLY what I would be looking for if I had room in my garage for another one. Thanks for planning your vacation to let you be part of it. Was a great pleasure meeting and visiting with you.

Dave, I truly enjoyed chatting with you about your beautiful sedan, and having the opportunity to meet you and some of your family. I hope to see you again in the future!

We are leaving southern Illinois in the morning after deciding to stay 2 more days to rest up and also watch the RC boat races Saturday and Sunday. Heading back to Walnut Shade MO, spend the night, then head for Yukon OK for a couple days, then on to Carlsbad.
Had a young flagger fella in road construction ask if our old car was a Model T! At least he was interested.
Saw a nice turquoise '32 3 window with an early hemi sitting in Thompsonville Illinois. Was tempted to inquire.

I've never heard of Maple Shade, MO but there is a Walnut Shade, MO along US 160 north of Branson. Is that the one?

  29. Maples, Walnut...they're both trees and provide shade. ;-P Yep, Walnut Shade is where they'll be.

If you're heading through Springfield on the way back west, be sure to at least wave when you go by the hotel area. I'm just a couple blocks north of there, so I may see ya.

That's good news--thanks. It seems the route is along part of US160 which is a great twisty hilly highway. The old Troop D guys used to say that "a guy could run into his own tail lights" on 160. Great motorcycle road, too.
