$27.63 in today's money. Still worth it, I'd say. :)

  5. Dennis O'brien didn't start out making club plaques. He started collecting them, and realized that there might be a need, or desire for them. If you feel that $ 45.00 is too much to pay for a reproduction plaque, don't buy one. Or just keep looking for something that may / may not show up a flea market, or a garage sale. I would definitely pay $ 349.00 for an original, bronze, San Francisco Ramblers club plaque. It means that much to me.

It is really all relative. If you re out of work or really hit by bills, you shouldn't have even been thinking about the question. But, if you have lots of money in the bank, your kids are grown and independent, your long term care insurance is paid up, you have no bills and no debt and it's what you always wanted, why not?

While it may not be a club plaque, this single-digit Delaware tag sold in 2008 for $675,000. In Delaware, it is a sign of prestige to have highly sought-after, low-digit plates. Even high 2 digit tags can be worth well upwards of $100K. Just goes to show it's worth what someone is willing to pay.

There are a lot of plaques that sell for more than $400, if they are originals. I belonged to this club in the late 50's and someone paid a good price for this plaque ...

There are also a lot of bogus plaques being made and sold on eBay as "Estate Finds" and some have even tried to duplicate the foundry mark on the back. Most of them are really rough looking so if you're thinking about bidding on one you see, take a real close look at the photos.

I sold this plaque to a private collector for $600.00. It was stamped Stylized Emblem on the back and it's somewhat rare. I made a copy for myself using this original plaque as a pattern before I sent him the original ...

I am currently building a wee furnace so I can melt down cans to cast my own. Not sure quite how to cast them but will save that for another day.

I think what I have is pretty unique and priceless to me. I found the plaque from a long gone club from the town I live in at a swap meet, probably paid $25. My son-in-law was at a local antique shop and found the hand carved positive that was used to cast the plaque for $50. I told him to grab it quick. I wouldn't sell the pair for $350.

The fact that it got up to $1648 means that someone else was willing to pay over $1500 for it as well.

I guess you better not leave these unattended on your car parked downtown!

  23. I have the same Gators Plaque only with Phoenix on the bottom... it was a fraction of what that pair went for.. LOL...

My roadster belong to the South Gate Gaters. I have a Gators plaque like the one pictured but it's not the original Gaters SCTA club. I am not certain of the origins of the Gators or Gatorettes. But these are pretty rare nonetheless. It's the only other I have seen and the Gatorettes, even more rare. But I have my eye out for the South Gate GATERS version and there seems to be at least two versions. One without the SCTA and one with. I know of only one in existence, and it belongs to an original South Gate Gaters streamliner. I'd pull teeth for one of these originals.
