  18. The pink one above keeps showing up a lot. I like it, and would drive it just like that. But I think it would look good if the area between the side trim was painted white. Maybe pearl white with pink pearl.

    Hello,

To paraphrase a popular children’s saying: “…One of these guys is doing his own thing. Can you pick out which is doing his own thing?” This was a popular activity when our son was a toddler. His separation skills were getting clear and distinct. So, he loved playing odd man out with his colored blocks, colored Legos and Brio train cars, etc. When he started with Hot Wheels and Matchbox, the colors were instantly the first thing he did to separate them.

So back when we were racing the black 58 Impala, it would have been hard to see which guy was doing his own thing in the photo. But, then, instant recognition from years of playing as kids taught us all to be aware of something that is different. One of those guys was doing his own thing.

In 1957 to 59, our local cruising grounds had one black 58 Impala in the mix. Where were all of the popular 58 Impala 348 sedans cruising around? When we would go to the Lion’s Dragstrip, there always were plenty of 58 Impalas of all colors and wheels. So, in So Cal, the Impala played an important part of the A/Stock car class racing. They all came from somewhere other than Long Beach and the Bixby Knolls area. That was puzzling.

So, in 1959, we started to see the bigger picture of being out powered by the influx of the 335 hp Impalas and Biscaynes at Lion’s Dragstrip. They ruled the roost and it was difficult to overcome the horsepower difference without being thrown into the Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes.

Which left us with a fast street 58 Impala with a Racer Brown Race Cam/Lifter complete kit, polished heads, and of course, a C&O Stick Hydro. No more stock car racing, but a tow vehicle and street daily driver. YRMV

Cars with the modern big wheels and rubber band tires don't belong on the HAMB
