Projects Too Far Gone to Save ?

REO = Ransome Eli Olds. REO made pickup trucks( REO Speedwagons,) from 1915. Olds were still making pickup trucks in the 90s.

I saw one of these in a junk yard full of old cars somewhere north west of Melbourne when I was visiting relatives a few years ago. My cousin lives in Ballarat, went on a road trip from Melbourne to visit her and somewhere on the way was the junkyard. The truck was pretty complete had a big flathead six , which actually turned over. Guy living there in a caravan said everything was for sale. I will see if I can find old pictures and dress. In the mean time, I dunno how old this website and adverts are but two cabs here one may well be a whole truck.

I sold a 37 Chev Truck to a guy in Wollongong back in 2005/6 it could be the same guy with this business. I should give him a call, he might be able to get me the measurements I need.

Glad to see someone building an olds pickup. I've been searching one for a couple years now to import to the US definitely not the easiest task especially just locating one, never thought it would be so hard to search other countries for trucks for sale haha

 

It depends on 3 things. Your abilities, your friends abilities, and last but not least your check book! After looking on here, ANYTHING can be saved with the 3 things mentioned prior.

 

Pretty sure I have a pair of aluminum ones like those!

I spoke to my cousin, she laughed at me and said that the cars are far away from where I thought, and that I saw them on a different visit in a different time . 2009 !
We were apparently on a tin hunting side trip from her place and had traveled into New South Wales, (something that cannot be done today! However as you live in NSW you can visit . She tells me they are at the end of a dead end street at the edge of a town on the NSW/Victoria border.

 

Hey Guys.

I finally got measurements on the weekend thanks to one of the guys on a local Facebook Chevrolet page.

It’s more than enough to get me started on the doors, I have a number of other guys looking out for any other information in regards to the doors and cab.

 

Here are the measurements of the height of the doors up to the base of the window and the length along the bottom.

 

He also sent through some close up images of the of the window frame inside and in.

 

If you look closely you will notice the door is completely symmetrical. That will make making up the MDF templated a whole lot easier.

Hey Guys.

I finally found some more time to get a bit more done, the first thing I did was cut out and shape up the lower skin.

 

The other thing I have been doing is rounding off the top section, this will fold down on the inside.

 

There are different ways to get the bend, but I used a high crown anvil on my English Wheel to achieve the shape.

 

The result is a gentle crown on either side.

 

With virtually zero chance of sourcing an original door, I will need to get further measurements if I want to construct the window frame. My only other option would be to track down some original window glass or a quarter window frame. In the meantime I will continue on finishing the lower skin and welding the two sections together.

A dare to be different build fest for sure. Im sure no matter what the outcome you will have bragging rights deserved. Anytime you can go from shit to a possible shine on a build like this , you will be looked up to by many. That in itself is the greatest reward. In my younger years I tackled and achieved one project that even surprised myself, without busting the bank only knuckles.

 

I'm really impressed that you are building the doors from scratch! Looking forward to seeing how they turn out and how you made them.

 

How are you going? I had a bedford cab in similar condition years ago. Main difference was the cutout in the cowl for the guards.
There is an Olds hot rod pickup in Albury somewhere...

Great project - there's a lot to do, can't wait to see it.

Just a thought: can you find a similar window and crank mech out of a donor. Make the door and cab to fit the window. It may no longer be symmetrical, but getting glass to fit and a window crank to work from scratch could be a big obstacle.
