History Early drag racing photos

This is what was cool about the Golden Age of drag racing; a couple friends, a race car, toolbox and a push truck. Often over twenty five such teams at the track on any given weekend.
Compared to today; two or more race cars, several truck/trailers complete w/shop, lounge and hospitality trailer, crew of ten or more. No wonder they can't fill a 16 car field these days.

 

Joe Jackson. Didn't his story end when he went to the west coast and ran out of money? I never really heard the whole true story.

 

Often went bare-footed?!........Oh wait!!!!.....different Joe.......sorry!!

Joe Jackson's story ended at Long Beach when he agreed to test drive someone else's car, drove off the track and crashed. He passed away three hours later.

The Dallas county Sheriff set up drag race on Singleton ave. in Dallas, circa 1951. This was just prior to Caddo Mills meet no. 1 later in the year.

 

Bet the W. O. Barrow's service station was still operating then......
