  11. I've missed a few weeks of the show, got to get back in action.
Here's something I did recently inspired by a couple of things that I love and hopefully many here does too.
Pizza and The Rat Fink of course!

    Hello,

Ever since we raced against a 59 Chevy Impala at Lion’s Dragstrip in one of our trial, warm up, timing runs. We could see the writing on the wall. Unless we were going to modify the 348 to give us more horsepower than the 280 hp that it had, we were giving up a horsepower advantage. The 59 Chevy Impala, business sedan, El Camino, all styles of sedans had that advantage.

My brother was getting tired of not finishing in 1st place in races against the 59 Chevy sedans and El Caminos. They had 335 HP and a 4 speed, whereas, our 58 Impala only had 280 HP and a 3 speed. So, the 55 HP advantage was to the 59 sedans and El Camino. It was getting to the point that was going to go in my favor, because, if my brother bought a 59 El Camino with 335 hp and a 4 speed, then who would get the pristine 58 Impala? Why, me, of course.

That would have been a dream at age 15 going on 16 with my driver’s license arriving any day. A year old 58 Impala with a 3 speed and 4:56 Positraction and 280 hp. It would be as cool as cool can get. My brother mentioned that he was serious as the El Camino could carry a ton of stuff in the back, including surfboards. So, a recipient was already there, just throw me into the mix and I would be a happy camper.

The year 1959 had the most options given in a long time. The 335 hp 348 motor, a 4 speed transmission, 4:11 to 4:56 Positraction gears made it almost unstoppable. So, my brother had two choices, give me the 58 black Impala and go out to buy a 59 of his choice. That deal looked very good to me. And/or, the second choice was to build a modified coupe for the B/Gas class, similar to his friend’s 34 Oldsmobile powered coupe that was in A/Gas.

But, as much money as he had saved, he was a little short, to outright buy another new factory car. He bought his 58 Impala with the proceeds of the sale of two old hot rods, a Model A stocker and his first car, a 1951 two door Oldsmobile sedan, as well as a little more saved from his afterschool job.

So, another new car was not going to happen. But, knowing our discussions, he wanted to have something that was faster and also be able to transport stuff for our small speed shop/engine building business, if needed. So, he had his eyes set on that 59 El Camino.

He wanted black and I wanted red, if I had a choice. The back of my mind was working overtime. I would get the black 58 Impala and down the line, the red El Camino would be headed my way when my brother was finished with that portion and into his surf van adventures. El Caminos are quick and easy for surfboard storage, but for overnights and stop overs, the security was not the best.

A great example of a small speed shop that we created in our teenage years.

Note: As the year rolled on, his decision was to get a different coupe and do the same modifications to keep it street legal, while still being able to race in the Gas Coupe/Sedan Class.

The 1940 Willys Coupe started in the fall of 1959 and had its run in B/Gas and with a 671 supercharger +292 ci SBC motor, almost set a national record in C/Gas in 1960. With, who knows how much horsepower was in the 671 292 SBC full race blower spec motor.

The 59 El Camino would have played an important part of our Precision Racing Engines small speed shop during our days in drag racing. IOHO

Spotted this on another site and it was too Cool not to share. I think that it’s quite artistic and I labeled it the "Blueprint T". What do you think ( plug in your own engine, wheels, etc. but leave the bones alone)?! Blueprint T.jpg

  21. I painted it the Chrysler Cordoba maroon. Get a 4 Dr 37 thru 40 Ford and cut off the top, add convertible windshield features straight posts with top attaching hardware and you'll have a tub like mine above.
