“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.” ~Mark Twain

    Hello,

For us old folks, age is something that gets in the way of life. Age has its rewards, as better ways to look and adapt to different things is always a plus. As a brash teenager, old age seemed like it was something we saw in our grandparents and thought we would never get like them. Now, that we are “that” old, where does time fly?

It was funny at the time, but when we met grandparents and other “old” folks, as teenagers, we were just starting. There was no inkling that we would ever come to that “old” stage. What, wake up with creaks and groans that weren’t there yesterday? A full day of rest after just trimming the hedge and doing a yard clean up? Wow, our old bones and well used body is showing signs of wear and tear. From those teenage and 20 something harsh sports/activities are finally catching up with us.

Countless hours of leaning over the fender, reaching for the farthest away part or service point did a number on our bodies. But, as teenagers, flexibility was in place and we had no idea that 60 years later, it would slow us down, considerably. Avid hot rod/drag race teens learned how to cope with varying things and roadblocks. In adapting to all situations, we made the most of our lives.

Our minds do matter as we see a fine future for our granddaughter. But, to keep up with the high strung activities is fun, but a day of rest afterwards is always in place the next day. We have always been in the “mind over matter” stage, most of our lives. Sometimes, it does not matter, as we know we did something good in our lives. We mind and it was a case of mattering to us throughout the later, growing up years. YRMV

“The trouble with being punctual is that nobody's there to appreciate it.”

    Hello,

My wife always laughs at this quote. When I introduced my wife/then girlfriend to my parents, they were impressed. She was impressed with the way my dad treated her and the aura he gave to her. Later on, during the drive home, she realized that when my dad said he would meet us at a certain place at a certain time, we had better be there. When we arrived at the restaurant, we could see my dad walking back and forth in front, while my mom was just standing on the sidewalk.

It was a long drive to Los Angeles to one of my dad’s favorite restaurants and it was well worth the extra effort to meet them there. But, the pacing back and forth was a little funny. My dad had always been punctual. When he said we were leaving for a deep sea fishing trip to the West end of Catalina Island, he came in to wake both my brother and me up an hour before we were to leave. This was 2 am. He wanted us to eat something for the boat ride to the spot. It was a commercial fishing boat that was owned by a friend of the family. But, my dad did not want to be late and wanted to arrive with his two sons early. So, a harsh wake up for both of the brothers.

    Jnaki

Over the years after we got married, it was always something to meet our parents for dinner at any restaurant. One year, we lived closer to Corona Del Mar than my parents from Long Beach. We drove into Corona Del Mar, up the coast, in plenty of time for a 5:30 pm dinner reservation at the 5 Crowns Restaurant. My dad had selected the restaurant for their anniversary dinner.
    upload_2021-9-3_4-59-3.png
So, of course, as we arrived with 30 minutes to spare, there he was pacing back and forth in front of the restaurant. We both chuckled and found a parking spot. Even my mom blamed the old 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery for us being late… which we weren’t. We just arrived early and were relaxed on the coastal drive to the destination.

Since our experiences with my dad’s anxiety of getting somewhere on time, (or early in his case) we began to somehow get into that mode throughout our lives growing up together and with our son. We then started to get ready in plenty of time to meet any time for the dinner, party, trips to the airport, etc.

We were always early and to this day, we are a very punctual couple. There have been a lot of the times, we have to plan, then wait on the time it takes to get somewhere, plus directions, etc. So, we are always early…but is someone listening? YRMV

"If you're not 10 minutes early, you're already late". A common quote from one of my son's old football coaches.

He wasn't wrong, when he was giving directions to get to his house, there was a split in the road leading up to it, it didn't matter which one, either would lead to his house. Another good one of his (about a restaurant)

I remember hearing that in late '67 from the Commanding General of the 9th Infantry Division. He wasn't too delicate with his speech but one understood the meaning.

“It is nice to be considered important, but it is more important to be nice.”

    Hello,

All along during our elementary school and junior high school days, topping off during high school, it was considered to be important if you were a varsity athlete. Football, basketball and baseball, as well as the other sports, too. The older guys involved in athletics were important to the community. So, the stage was set for someone, like an up/coming athlete, who liked to play all sports from early “kid” days to the teenage years.

It was important to me to have some success in athletics, since I was good at learning the different sports. Even tennis with those heavy, bulky wooden racquets was a problem, but my single hand, backhand return was pretty good as a little kid. So, the trail to be important was on its way.

In junior high school, it was sports that got me through school. Every Saturday, was sports day with our teams competing against the other Long Beach schools. The competition was getting fierce and I could see some limitations in being important in all sports, so the activities were narrowed down to what I could do best. A four sport athlete was in the horizon, but not with the specialists popping up all over other schools.

    Jnaki

High school was a time for continuing to narrow down the activities, from football, basketball and baseball to just football. The size and ability of other high school athletes at our school was too much to overcome. It was like trying to beat a hot rod that had a 50 horsepower advantage with your underpowered motor. That incident also happened during our high school years.
    upload_2021-9-10_4-2-41.png
So, finally, a realization was that being nice led to more acceptance by all those concerned. When I met someone, it was instant togetherness and being nice played a big part of continuing in any relationship. I was learning fast.

By the time I was a senior in college, it was many rounds of feeling important with things accomplished. But, when I met my future wife, it was more important to be nice. This has been my mantra since those early learning days and now, my wife always mentions to all that will listen, that I had developed the idea of being nice above all else.

Our relationship bloomed and has lasted the test of time and adventures. Now, as in several high school escapades, I was considered, “Mr. Nice Guy.” Ha! That was more impressive than being considered important…

"The best revenge is a life well-lived."

"That's the best revenge of all: happiness. Nothing drives people crazier than seeing someone have a good/wonderful life."

    Hello,

One thing we learned over the time from 1966 to the present was to ignore what other people told us about being what we seemed to be, while college students. We did not want a 3 bedroom house with a white picket fence, (did that) drive a staid family car (did that, too) and get settled on a suburban family life with a good job in some business. (did not want to do that)

So, in the eyes of others, we were going to be in some kind of limbo and eventually wind up working at McDonalds. We looked at some of our friends from high school and they were already married, had a house, two cars and two jobs. They were locked into their lifestyle and were only 23-24 years old. For us, being together was the most important thing.
    upload_2021-9-17_4-55-18.png
So, to appease our parents, we made it legal. but, a small apartment in coastal OC was where we wanted to live, not in the areas where we grew up. We did not care to have a house, but we did have two cool cars that we drove for 100k miles, until they were sold.

    upload_2021-9-17_4-55-8.png
We were still one of the only ones involved with old hot rods, surfing, traveling, coastal beach lifestyle, playing rugby and now, photography. It was a lifestyle that we liked, got used to real fast and did not have a care in the world. Despite what others were doing, getting locked into the society’s idea of a family lifestyle. We were going our own way.

    Jnaki

Over the years, we were constantly told that we had to plan for the future, now. Being 24-25 when we got married, we were just starting, so why would we plan for 45 years from now? Where was the reasoning behind that? It was the NOW, that we had to enjoy and be “Happy Together.” (as presented by the Turtles 1967)
    Turtles

So far, it has turned out to be a life well lived, despite the pandemic and everything it does to all of us. Our lives started with a world wide pandemic in 1968 and now all of these years later…another more powerful, but different version has hit everywhere. Stay safe…

    JNAKI,

This one & the one below strike a note with me as I have been so blessed in my life & I thank God everyday for what he has provided for me & my family. I believe that being honest is a requirement for a truly great life. I always scratch my head & wonder why dishonest people, whose lives are not so good, are so jealous of honest people who have been blessed when they could start to have a better life by being honest!!!

“We will remember who we were or who we weren’t. The box score at the end of the game doesn’t change.”

    Hello,

If past history is any indication of how much one remembers about that time period, we are all a caught off balance. Back then, history was a class we had to take in almost every grade level from 1st to 12th. Even in grade 13-14 or junior college, history of some sort was required. So, we have been drummed into a historical time line of the world and our society.

When it comes time to remember when some of us are gone, "it happened the way it was supposed to happen," is a good way to remember as much as possible. Things are going to slip away slowly and before the big time “AZ” malady hits us, keeping those brain cells working and advancing is just as important as anything else.

But, in the long run, what you leave in your house, attic, or neatly filed away in an external hard drive, someone will eventually find it and then your life is under the microscope. My wife’s one big worry is, what will our son or our granddaughter’s family in the older years will look at our stuff eventually. They will think of how much there is to store, get rid of or minimize all of our files will definitely be a challenge. But, it is our history and they are the result of our past.

    Jnaki

We all don’t want to think about the box score in the end, but we try to live life to the fullest with the least amount of hassle for us. Being the best husband, dad, grandfather ever, being nice neighbors, relationships with friends and long time relatives comes to mind. Sometimes it is hard to over come the idiocy of relatives, but they are what they are… the lineage is very thin…as the years go by in history. YRMV

“ You Get What You Give.”

    Hello,

The New Radicals have one of the happiest songs on the mp3 playlist and a phone ringer to tell me it is our granddaughter. Although text is the favorite mode of communication, next to a Facetime chat, phone conversations are great for the grandparents and granddaughter. She grew up with us from 6 months young to 4th grade and then it started tapering off as she got older.

The quote is a straight forward song title, but everyone has their own meaning of what it could mean. It could have a 1000 different ways to look at things in our world. If you are nice, present yourself as a nice person to others, it will return as a pat on the back. If you are mean and uncompromising, no one will give you’re the time of day and ignore your lame comments. If you show stupidity, not only will it come back to you, but will affect the rest of your life and family. So, there are ways to follow the quote and present your best self to others, starting with your wife/girlfriend/family. YRMV

    Jnaki

It works and has worked for us (me) to today’s relationship with my wife, her sister and our granddaughter. In high school, I was known as a radical, with sandals T-Shirt and Levis. The dress code was button down shirts tucked in and buckle pants, with regular hard Cordovan shoes. It was not a uniform, as those came in many years later in public schools. But, the rules became relaxed when more kids began the same T-Shirt and Levis for the daily clothes for their own functionality.

When it got out that I was a nice guy, it hit the fan and I was humbled. Now, everyone, including some teachers understood the teenage psyche coming from this athlete/surfer that had hot rod/drag racing plastered all over the school notebooks. He was a nice guy, after all. Besides, how could a guy with a funky 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery not be a friendly guy? Ha!
