I just bought this cool A coupe but it needs some help and so do I. I'm not familiar with straight front axels although I'm getting educated. What I'd need to know is who manufactured my front axel so I can get an idea of what's wrong and what's right. There's some mismatched hardware and the shocks bodies are pulled up tight against the axel beam. Are those GM spindles and disc brakes. Some of the parts appear to be common to other axels, is that possible? Anyway here are a couple of pics and any help will be appreciated. No the car is not on the road.
Looks like a stock 1937-1941 ford axle . You can pin point that by taking measurements of the centerline to centerline of perches and axle bosses. Check out https://m.roadkillcustoms.com/early-ford-beam-axle-identification-and-dimensions/ And you can I.d. the wheel bolt pattern by measuring it. It’s most likely ford
Sid's has what is probably a more detailed breakdown on Ford cross spring axles. Ford Dropped Axles | Nostalgia Sid's | Custom Axle Alterations I'd have to say that Mink is correct though. I think that is the same axle I had on my T bucket back in the mid 70's.
Yep, a 33-36 axle and 42-48 spindles. I don't know my disk brakes, but I'd guess they are a semi-modern bracket kit. You will probably have to show some closer pics of the calipers or see if there are any numbers on them to get them positively identified.
Wow, Knew I came to the right place. At least I'll know what I'm asking about when I start work on it. As always a wealth of information and experience, Can't thank you guys enough. Surely there's an Alliance vendor that would have rebuild parts.
An easy way to tell is to measure the axle thickness where the spring perch passes thru. 36 is 2" - 37 is 2 1/4"
Just remember that when you order a king pin kit, order the kit to fit the spindle and not the axle. The king pin bore is the same up to 48, however the king pins are different lengths for 37-41 (78A) and 42-48 (21A).
