I think some have missed the intent of the OPs post, pretty sure he wasn’t looking for a radial v bias ply debate.

While we’re at it, Ford or Chevy? ;)

In life I have learned there are 2 rules to follow; #1 The boss is always right.
#2 Reread rule #1. So bias ply tires it is.:D

Back in 84 when I bought a 53 Olds that needed tires bias ply were the cheapest you could get so I got a set and would be nice if it was still the same.

Radial tires were invented here in the U.S. in 1916 by Arthur Savage of the Savage Arms Company. Just sayin!;)

Well with a title of "No radial tires" it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that it would lead to that debate.

I have radial big/littles on my '55 F100. (see avatar pic) They are on Romeo Palemides 2 piece wheels he designed for F100s, as they look like Kelsey-Hayes with the hubs and caps.
I had a set of bias plies on there 5 years ago. F100 rode like a truck. Radials are sized to fit the 'staggered' wheels:
8" wide rear, 6" wide front.
They are N.O.S. Tiger Paws. Now I'm lookin' for a 421 mill, to 'put the the Tiger in the tank'!
Truck already thinks it's a Tin Indian...

There's really no argument. With the HAMB and TROG, if they specify tires, those are the rules if you want to play in that game. But, the world is wide and like Beanscoot said, traditional may be tough to define,in general. So, run what you want outside of someone's personal game.

I'm sure Indy, Roaring Roadsters the Dry Lakes Racers and the Hotrod/Custom movement fully embraced them as well...Not in any capacity that I've ever read here so for that matter it's really only of a historical significance...

Main reason was cost , everyone knew of the handling improvements but the damn things just were out of reach of the average driver. I hated how the biased tires wandered with the cracks in the road an you can't get me to use them on a high performance car

Some debate is justified as he was wondering if there was a performance advantage with radials in the sand that was behind the rejection of such tires at these period based events...

I don't think my radials look bad, or too new?

The nerds dressing like 1930 at those events are the real crime.

  25. Radial tires were invented in 1946 by Michellin, so theoretically could have been used on almost all Hot Rods.

Of course they weren't popular in the States, unlike Europe.

It's a weird old world. The 'tradition' of using bias ply tires probably comes from most people not being able to afford the better performing new-fangled radials. Nowadays we pay more for the privilege of looking cool, and the limitations that brings. Who would have thought.......................

    Stogy,

    and the controversial tires:

Back in 2015, I believe theTROG rules said no knobby or paddle tires, so I bought these. I would have preferred the bias version, as they were more economical, but not available in my sizes.
Many thousands of miles on this set up, no complaints at all.

In reality, all the events I have entered are relatively low-key, tech inspectors have never mentioned the radials or the "early prototype" 10si alternator. Everyone is just having safe fun. Not trying to cheat, just enjoying "run whatcha brung".

    Peace

I was just a kid in the 60s, but I did pay a little bit of attention to cars. The radials I remember were the Michelin X tires on our family Citroen wagon, and on our friend's Volvo 544.

Not quite hot rod material yet.

I also remember how nice it was when we finally stuck some radials on wife's slightly OT Dodge, in the mid 80s...her dad had bought the cheapest bias tires he could find for it, and I 10 had serious ruts east of Tucson at the time. With the new radials, suddenly it went straight down the highway, without wandering. But other cars with bias tires were not that bad on that stretch of road.

I've run radials on my Chevy II, and it still likes to go where it wants at times. So I might as well have the tires on it that look right.

No more of a crime than people dressing like 50's - 60's at other hot rodding events. Get over yourself, they're just people enjoying the event and getting into it. Stop being judgmental of other's, I'm sure you're not perfect yourself. You ever been to a TROG event? I've been to 2 of them, no I didn't dress the part, but I had no ill will towards those that did, in fact I think they made the event better.

They're terrible, take them off those rims and send them to me. I know just what to do with them.;)
