What are the spring mounts in your second picture on the first page? I have seen those before and cant seem to place them.

They are the standard Chevy 20s/30s rear front spring mounts for the under the frame swinging shackles , I turned up a new larger outboard pin that pressed in to replace the original bushes.
Hope these pics make more sense.

Update on the hot air intake box, I found a scrap of ally left that was just big enough to make a fake scoopy type thing, a roll of stainless mesh was been lurking in the shed for 40+ yrs and it's day has finally come!

Not sure about the look but better that a weird looking box which it's covering.

Changed the working carb for one with a smaller venturi and played around with the jet sizes in it and it runs a lot better now.

The top of the carb is now hot, the base is cool, but the manifold below feels just ever so slightly warm, a lot of odd things happen with pressure and flow changes!

Has anyone had any luck running Stromberg 81s on a Chevy banger? Wondering if I should give them a try, but not wanting to waste cash.

Just a nice happy update to this thread for y'all, although I have already mentioned this elsewhere.

Well you can forget all that free used twin carb and iffy manifold junk, I sought proper advice and after consulting Clive at Stromberg he recommended a Stromerg 81, so I bit the bullet and bought a brand new one !

Which meant yet another welded up experimental manifold, Clive advised that it would need some sort of a plenum chamber in it to get it to work properly.

So I came up with this, which has a wide area below the carb and a water heated chamber underneath that.

Problem sorted, it runs really well now with the jetting it came with, I'm properly impressed, it looks the part too, maybe a tad too modern for 1928 but who cares, money well spent IMHO.

Twin carb holes in the hood healed over really quick too :)

Thanks Baumi, the detailing is the fun bit, although it's far from perfect!

Thanks brading, MIG welding could be better, and I've had plenty of practice that's number four so far, there may yet be others to follow!

Don't think it's too inefficient compared to some period intakes I've seen, a few of pics of my method that may help someone.

Thanks, try enough times and things sometimes work out ok...

Just realised that I now own the major items needed to make a fair job of almost recreating this period photo, except for the hat and goggles [IMG]

Hi folks, not too much going on with the racer, so boredom made me try my hand at a bit of acid etching, never did anything like it before.
After studying a whole lot of YouTube, and way too many hours of learning how to drive Inkscape in order to design and print the resists, I had a go.
Made a couple of plaques for the racer, very surprised how well they turned out, ok they don't stand real close scrutiny but I think they add something. Yeah they won't add speed but I like them!

No sweat, beard relaxed (unlike the last pic) just cruising, rear spinning and digging in, soaking up what little horse power we have.

Been having more fun on another beach, it sure does a fella good to just get out and play!

22 runs, 7 wins, 1 draw, against all comers, best run of the two days 45 mph : 1/8 mile.

The only pic of my car I've found so far.

    Grudge match.jpeg

Credit for the pic and for organising the whole thing to the Lundy Flyers Motor Club, thanks a lot guys and gals.

This beach racing is a blast, as the tide recedes the sand dries out, one lane is always slightly higher than the other so they are never the same, some areas drag you down, other areas that when you hit them it's like hitting the nitros!
One lane it's a twitchy fight all the way, then the other one will be like cruising. Then add in the bikes snaking all the way up and narrow tyres like mine following their ruts, no two runs are ever the same.

Next day different tides, different lanes, different races again.

Because of all that, what look like completely miss matched cars power and tyre wise, can make for some very close racing, which is what we're all there after.

Drivers with more capable cars (more power wider tyres etc.) will often voluntarily take the worst lane for a better race, not wanting to win by a mile, which is all rather sporting don't you know old chap.

Yes I did note the wavy fishtailing with the in air filming...I suspect drone...it really captures excitement that formerly went unnoticed...

It is funny how so many forms of racing take place in very inhospitable locations be it Salt, Dirt or Salty Sand...

I enjoyed watching that...I'm happy that you fellas abroad have similar avenues for having speed related fun...even better is having you share the festivities...thanks so much 282...;)

The drone pilot was amazing, so fast and circling around moving cars whilst keeping the camera pointed in the right direction, I believe he also did the editing.

The water splash and the rut you see the cars bouncing in was caused by a trickle of water running out from the top of the beach, it wasn't there in the morning of the first day.

Saunton beach in the pic of my racer and the belly tanker is fine sand and smooth, the Bridlington one in the video is firmer and a bit gravely, but undulates. The one at Pendine is flat but the ripples on it change each time the wind changes, they can be along the beach or across it, serious timed runs take place there and really hard starts are frowned on. I haven't driven it but some times the slow down area turns to porridge!

I think the reason both the COE and flat bed trucks were so fast is that they are re-bodied 4x4s, traction is king on the beach.

    Things are happening!
I was never really happy with the length of the car, especially the rear springs, I also realised that apart from the rear springs and the wheelbase being too long, what also made it look wrong was the cowl being longer than the hood/bonnet.
So I set about fixing those things.

Spring pin hole not moved so wheel base stays the same, but tail moved forward 4" , cockpit is now too short.

All five bolts bridging the welds and going through to the cross member the spring hanger acts as neat reinforcing.

Fitted some 47 Chevy pickup front springs which took 8" out of the wheelbase, they don't move at all, maybe not a bad thing but most likely way too stiff.

The rear wheels now look a much nicer fit to the to cockpit in my opinion, but look at those frame horns!

Notice the difference in one spring eye on the shorter springs, this was a problem, for a while.

Boy! When you tear into things, you really do it up good! The tire to tail looks much better, and also, I'll call it "tire to elbow" looks great! You are not going to have any problem with that "Z" spice at all! Lookin Good!
