worked on a lot of early triumph (tr6?) that had a similar lower joint made out of brass or bronze it had a very course thread in it allowing turning filled with 90 weight

Triumph Herald. [It had a removable spindle]

The favorite of road racers in the 60's.
Even the McLaren M1 CanAm car used them

 

My first thought was Herald, but I think Squirrel is right (again!) with the TR6.

I don't think Heralds had the removeable upper trunnion.

 

I didn't look close enough to figure out which model it fits....and I didn't come up with the TR6 idea, I just posted a link to a picture, so you can go from there.

 

What is this mysterious removable upper trunnion you are referring to?????


I see a balljoint hole for the upper .[circled in red]
And a removable lower trunnion [circled in blue]



Triumph Herald uprights are actually "Alford and Alder" forged uprights, that were also used on spitfires and lotus 7's etc

The orginal Alford and Alder upright was used on the "Standard 8" saloon [of Standard/Triumph fame]
The Triumph Herald pre-dated the TR6 by 9 years ,so it it more likely the TR6 used Herald components than the other way round.
