    Hello,

Sometimes, the old look that Long Beach’s Bill Stroppe’s Shop in Signal Hill put out at the drags and streets, brings back memories from those times. The small drag racing classes were being phased out and the factory sponsored hot race cars were the popular scene. Like some classes, there were street versions made and looked as if they were powered with nearly the same power as those that people saw at the drags.

The smaller classes were starting to phase out and the coverage of drag racing were the exhibition runs by old Gas Coupes/Sedan cars, the Street Roadsters and other cars lumped into Eliminator Classes. The FED dragsters were now the top dog of the chain and brought the most bang for the buck to promoters and fans.

But, those FX cars were really something when they showed up anywhere. The factory style and accessories plus whatever the aftermarket places had for the “LOOK.”

    Note:
If you see this silver Comet on the streets or at a car show, check out the license plates.

Actually the production was one wagon and 21 Calienti hardtops. The dual scoop hood was a “mid year” addition, the teardrop hood was used when Stroppe built the cars.
Great photo of a Comet before the graphics and body modifications.

No, the ‘64 Comets all had the 427 FE engine, some of the ‘64’s including Chrisman’s car were converted to ‘65 models. As the rules became “stretched” the SOHC engine was stuffed into some of the cars. The factory passed out ‘65 cars to the big teams who then sold their ‘64 cars to privateer’s. The Tom Coward ‘64 Comet is a prime example, after Tom Coward Mercury received the ‘65 car they sold the ‘64 car to one of their mechanics, Joel Kanois, who then raced under the Kanois Enterprises banner. I knew Joel, that is where the hood on my Cyclone came from.

To add to kabinenroller's comments......The 427 SOHC made its debut in 1965.

Yes, I agree, maybe I was not clear about that in my post.
All these years later a Cammer still is the ultimate powerplant and has more WOW factor than anything else.
