1959-60 Pittman-Edwards Willys Coupe with new new slicks and rear fender.

    Hello,

Most of the Westcoast Gas Coupe and Sedan Class racers were running Bruce Slicks under and inside of the stock rear fender. There was no need for larger wheel cutouts. Most of the slicks fit nicely inside of the opening, as it was supposed to be street legal. But, with the advent of wider rims, and a new company with wider, softer slicks arriving on the scene, what hot rodder could not pass up running the new slicks.

When M&H came on the scene, the steel rims were widened and painted. Most ran them until the mag wheel industry caught up with their wide rims and a larger diameter for the rear wheels/ slicks. Now, the race was on for bigger and wider slicks to harness the increased horsepower.

Once that was in place, there was no going back on the small slicks that fit inside of the rear wheel openings. (Except for real street legal daily drivers, like a black 58 Impala... ) Now, for the dragstrip racers, it was radius the wheel well openings and stick in the largest wheel and tire combination possible. The powerful motors from big inch Cadillac motors, Oldsmobile motors and the supercharged SBC motors kept the pace, with a few going to the larger, but heavier Hemi motors.

Then as the times and speeds increased, the styles with the largest mag wheels and wide rear slicks came into play for the top teams… until those classes started falling by the wayside for inclusion into other rule classes.
    K.S. Pittman-John Edwards transition…

I'm thinking about getting custom backspace wheels to pull them in about 1 1/2", since I have the room inside. They will still hang out a bit.

Something I really enjoy about these cats and the period is that fronts and rear wheels didn't always match.

That's lost on a lot of folks, now.
