So what color are you planning to paint it? You have done an amazing job of creating a car Ford should have built. Other people have tried, but you NAILED IT.:D:D:D

I love old style pinstriping so eventually the car will get some strokes.

Very cool build. Please excuse me, I`m not trying to be a smart ass. But I know you do upholstery. Is there a reason why you mounted your armrests backwards from stock. Maybe a bigger area to rest your elbow ?Also why did you put your seat belt buckle on the outboard rather in the middle. Stock location is in the middle. I know you have a logical reason. If I don`t ask, I will never know why you did it this way.

Thank you. I posted a few pages back when I painted the door jambs. A pretty nondescript plain solid grey similar to a color Ford had back in 49/50. When I first started this project it was going to be a full on custom, but as I got the roof and box rails fabricated I decided to keep it pretty stock looking as if Ford may have built it. I had to chop the top a little more than I wanted to line up the side glass with the PU back glass. Here’s the color the car will be…hopefully this winter…

They are 50 armrests as the 49s don’t have finger pull openings. I didn’t realize they were backwards, but yes, I put the wider area to the rear to rest my arm on. More aerodynamic too. Haha. I always put the buckle belt on the outside because it hides easy under the seat and the small insert end is less obtrusive in the middle. Can also slide out the back easily so belts aren’t in sight. It has a center belt also that can be brought out for a third passenger. I like to take my grandkids for rides so belts are a must.

That paint is a dead-on match for the upholstery. Well done!

I’ve thought about it, but the dash isn’t quite done yet. No speedo and I’ll add a/c yet and make panels to hide under the dash and around the column. Might be a while. I want to get the tonneau done and drive it some yet this summer/fall.

It seems that two weeks is long enough for you.:D You have moved faster than the Energizer Bunny on this project and the work is just indescribable.

This is just car porn.... plane and simple. When you show it, it will have a crowd around it, saying, "I never knew Ford made a Ranchero back then". :D That's how good it is!!!!!

I’d like to thank all of you for the compliments and kind words. By mid next week I hope to have the tonneau cover done and take it for a trip around the block. So far it’s only gone in and out of my shop a half dozen times. Since I didn’t build the chassis (I have checked everything.) it needs some break-in time. I am already a little concerned about the fmx tranny that’s in it (just a takeout). So I hope to check it all out in the next couple months putting some miles on it in short jaunts. Finishing the little things left in the interior, a/c, paint and miscellaneous will wait till late fall/winter. And I’m nowhere close to the energizer bunny…although I did put in one 8 hour day last week. This is all just fun in retirement.

Tonneau cover is done. Ready to take its first cruise around the block. I’ll wait till morning when it’s not 95 feels like 100…

    Wow! It just gets better.

I love the tailgate's Ranchero emblem.

  25. I wish I was there to go with you. We'd have our ears turned on listening for anything strange and afterwords, you could say "quit holding my beer". LOL. I'll be waiting for the video that someone will surely take. :)

Once around the block…definitely needs some steering help. Has the original steering box. Front needs to come down a couple more inches. And I see one brake light didn’t work when I came back. The fun of building an old car…

  27. Congratulations! You weren't on the end of a tow rope. LOL. I agree with your front end statement. You are so close. :)

Well you had one brake light. What was the purpose of the clear plastic in the cover build? That sounds as cool as it looks.:D

Not sure what’s going on with the brake light. Works with flashers and now works again with brakes.

That clear plastic is 4 mil clear vinyl. I use it a lot for upholstery and sheet metal pattern making. Using a light tack adhesive I lay it down over the area I want to copy. If you blow up the pic you’ll see I drew a sharpie outline of the masking tape pattern and across the edge of the hinge. Then I remove the vinyl with the sharpie outline and with light adhesive lay it down on the plywood. I used a Sabre saw to cut out on the sharpie line. Lightly sand the edges with 80 grit and screwed down to the aluminum frame. A layer of 1/4” landau top foam and then the marine vinyl.
