Hot Rods 34 ford 3w made entirely from junk!

Steering yoke is on its way! My brother found one of my dads, now im onto making a pair of rudder pedals, like this, to use as gas and brake pedals.

 

Great idea on the pedals Jim. It is going to look great.

 

Tacked it back together so a friend could tow it in a local parade honoring our small towns history. The deer park drag strip was a huge part of our small town, so i lettered up the old door skins, and off to the parade it goes.

With the top open, it kinda looks like a vicky. Hmmm? I have a bunch more junk pieces, maybe a vicky!

 

Well, it went to its first show. People were all aboutthe car. Some thought it was an old deer park drag car, some thought it was a salt flats car, but everyone liked it, as far as i could tell.

 

now to get it running and done, so i can run it down the local track!

 

I’m thinking some 33-34 front inner fender type bulges would finish off the front end, and make the front look a little lower. Always liked the look of them on 33-34 hiboys.

 

Made a little progress. I really like the body line continuation on the nose. Another great idea from the guys on the hamb.

Do you plan to extend body line at the bottom too?

 

Yes, the bottom body line will become part of the hinge for the one piece front end, but it will have the body line in it.

Wow, that thing is cool. Kinda like a 32 vicky mated with a 34, i like it.

 

I remember a magazine feature car built like that - I think they called it a Super Coupe or something like that...may have been based on a Thom Taylor phantom rendering...

 

Now, its time to spend literally day and days welding on the quilt, to make it one with its rust. Heres a little quilting from today.

That steering wheel looks exactly like the one on my '64 Simplicity Landlord. Mine is black, but they used white ones on Simplicity built Allis Chalmers tractors of the same vintage. Mine is about 15" across.

 

Im thinking about brakes. Will it stop good with only rear beakes? I can convert the rears to disc, if that will help. If not, i want to run airhearts up front. Will this stop it? I really like the clean and open look of the brakeless frontend, but its gotta stop!

 

Airhearts would be great on the front axle. I ran a B/Gas bracket car in the '60s with rear only brakes, it would not be safe on the street. What are your plans for air intake to radiator?

 

A friend ran a gas class 40 Willys truck in about 1969. He tells some interesting stories about stopping from 140+ mph. with only rear brakes, slicks with 10 lbs. of air and no chute.
He has recently found the truck and is rebuilding it. He has front brakes in it this time.

 

I lost my brakes one day and drove home on the E brake. It stopped OK but I never got going very fast or made a panic stop.

It depends on the curb weight, and how alert you want to be. Back in the day, I ran quite a few 23 and 27Ts with 12 spoke spindle mounts. But they weighed in at about 2000-2500lbs. I used an empty parking lot to get the 'feel' of rear wheel stopping. In todays world though, I'd be designing a trick anti-lock system wired into a set of railroad horns complete with flashing lights. Oh, and a mobile Wi-Fi blocker with a range of a 100yrds around the car.

 

I think airhearts are my answer. Thanks for the input. As for air intake, the bottom 7 inches of the radiator will actually be exposed, due to the swoop in the 34 front sheet metal. If this is not enough, i will build a scoop, or maybe some oval side holes on the hood. I am hpoing not to need them, because i really like the look it has.

 

With just rear brakes, it is virtually impossible to panic stop on a road with a sweeping curve...the ass end will always come around when you lock up the brakes. Without the front brakes it is very easy to lock up the rear brakes, especially in a panic!

 

What he said!!! The tire that slides wants to lead. Also consider that weight transfer upon deceleration, is opposite of launching.

 

Yea, i have an old set of airhearts that i was given in trade for a set of model a brackets for installing the wood kit. These will be perfect, and they are free, which fits the build.
