  2. Yeah, I really didn't need to see that one...

  3. Some neat stuff and a whole lotta shitboxes and OT material. The person that put the Vette rear and IFS under that Tudor should be flogged

Thanks @Jalopy Joker...I suspect it was more than smoke that knocked attendance...It's pretty obvious some major work has got to be done to win back some rightfully upset former patrons...hopefully this is a new beginning...

    Hey JJ,

By any chance through the thick smoke, did you get any photos or movies of the cruising downtown by the hot rods and trucks? We know the organizers have increased allowable year of the builds, so there would have been some off topic cars. It was just a cool place to see the old cars in the downtown area back then.

No, we haven’t been back for all of this time as the weather was too hot for us. Plus, as nice as it was during a winter day, the summer is not all that welcoming and pleasant. (sorry, Reno folks… )

We timed one of our vacation road trip to be in Reno during the tail end of the long ago, Hot August Night. It was a good time to stop as the weather outside was hot and awful. So, an air conditioned room was perfect for an overnight stop before heading West to the S.F. Bay Area.

this was the time before they expanded their allowable year to 76 or older and it was pretty good show. the downtown area was totally packed and crowded. so, the outskirt areas had a lot of cool hot rods cruising around. but, anywhere one stepped out of the A/C hotel, a cool hot rod cruised by or was parked on the streets.

In my own photos, I am not much for getting a shot with a ton of people walking around. So, it was a rather sparse hot rod photo collection of photos. My wife liked the rest stop from our long drive, just getting to the city.

You didn't happen to get a shot of the famous Reno arch with hot rods coming out of, or going into the arch? I always wanted to get into that building next to the arch to take a top down photo for the most unusual shot of hot rods and the famous arch.

I drove four hours every year to this swap. I stopped going the year Bill passed away. I'm not sure if I'll be back. My$0.02

They call it HOT August Nights for a reason - for me the downtown cruise on Friday night was always the highlight - one entry I will never forget was an older couple dressed to the nines in colors that matched their pristine restored blue/white Metropolitan convertible with their dog asleep on a pillow behind them, followed by a black Metropolitan stuffed with a loud early Hemi - racing out near Fernley was fun the years they did that - and I always enjoy visiting the National Auto Museum when I'm in Reno, lots cooler in there...

Like many venues I think the organization started leaning more toward the profit mode. They used to limit the amount of cars-then opened it up it seems. We went for about about 1996 to 2015 and the last few years you could see the demise of what it once was. Entertainment went downhill and security became lax as well. It was great from maybe 2000 to 2007 but then the changes degraded it in many ways. We used to stay at the Peppermill for 4-5 days and really enjoyed the venue there and all the other places as well. Swap meet was great too! Hot during the day but it's hot where we live so no big deal. Go to the swapmeet in am then back to the Hotel and hang out till early evening then go outside to the show and watch the bands etc. Lot of good vendors too. After our last couple of times there we decided no more-especially Friday and Saturday nights--bad actors everywhere.. All the folks we went with all those years will no longer attend either.

We were downtown in 98 when the riot began--it was crazy--we were leaving down a side street by Harrah's and police were coming from everywhere. They told us get out of here quickly which we did. They locked down the Casinos with everyone inside too. We got back to our room and watched it on TV.
