I’m wanting to hook up the original temp sending unit in my ‘58 Pontiac. The car has a big block in it. I’m wondering if I will need a reducer coupling (and if yes, what size) to thread the sending unit into the intake. Glancing at it quickly as I was cleaning up last night it looked like the sending unit is a smaller diameter? Thanks in advance. Allan
First, you have to pull that plug and determine if it is 3/8" NPT or 1/2" NPT. NOTE: The adapter must have a step for the bulb to seal against. Google "temperature sensor adapter" and lots of results will come up. Russ
Yes, you'll need a reducer fitting, preferably the one that was in the old engine. If it's gone you'll have to get one that has the seat in it for the old temp bulb to seat against. Probably the same as used in most aftermarket mechanical gauges. .bjb
You can get an assortment of the special adapters at most parts stores for about 10 bucks. Most Chevys take the basic 1/2" pipe. If you were near here, I'd give you one. I think I have a dozen of them.
You'll need the one with the shoulder, like the one used when you put a later ''848'' head on a '53 - '54 Chev
Like 302GMC said, lots of them in old Chevy heads...Chevs of the 40's sells them. Napa part number is BK7011798, for $6.49. Here is a picture...
