Beautiful day on the salt! All three courses are ready to go. Return Roads, Course Signage & Turnouts are complete. The pits are almost ready. Security will start tonight. Don’t forget that Inspection starts Thursday morning. The salt truly is the best in years on all three courses – Firm, hard & smooth.

Looks like everything is lining up for me to come out Saturday. Again, this is my first time seeing speedweek - what should I expect? When should I shoot for getting there (I live in Salt Lake City)? Is there a designated area to spectate from? Does it cost money to come spectate? Thanks in advance!

I'm going to have to live vicariously through your photos and stories.
Have fun! Stay safe! ....maybe next year!

@Suicide77 Yes, you can't get onto the salt without paying entry fee/pit pass, either pay for day or week.
As for spectating, it's a wide open area, you pick your spot. You can walk up and watch them leave from the starting line, or park yourself somewhere along the race track. However, you'll be about 1/8 of a mile away from where the cars are running, so a lawn chair and binoculars would be a good idea.

Take a beach umbrella for shade rather than a canopy. Easier to tuck away when you walk away from the spot and a lot easier to fold up if the wind kicks up like it did today. Big straw hat. Sunburned ears hurt. Lots of water and maybe Gatorade type drink. A good camera with extra batteries if you have one. A battery powered portable radio to listen in with rather than running the car battery down and a CB to listen to the tower if you have one. I ran the battery down in my 48 running the radio in the truck listening to the racing the last time I was down there. Got a Bonneville style push start from a couple of kids in a Maverick I think.
If you like cool T shirts take along some cash to buy some from the racers who are selling them in the pits to finance their trip.

Gonna miss the show again this year. Bullshit Covid rules, I can't get across the frickin border. Rained out the last time in 2019. Really missing my salt fix. IMG_0939.JPG IMG_0951.JPG IMG_0977.JPG

Mr48Chev & Daddy_O - thanks for the replies and tips! The radio sounds like a must! I have a CB but it isn't hooked up. Hope the wind stays down, was out there last month and had a head wind so bad I burned an extra 6 gallons of gas. Good call on the binoculars too, I'll make sure to pack some with me along with spare cash :)

  21. I was last there in 2012. I used an ipod that had an FM tuner in it. Could listen to the radio broadcast, with an earbud, and watch from where ever. Battery lasted all day.
Just remember, good hat, good sunglasses, sunscreen, and hydrate steady.

We had horrible winds yesterday and last night. Most of the canopies and such in the pits blew down. Official said they got some teching done but it would take a ton of extra help today to get things going. Motorhome shook all night last night and the smoke came into the area so bad you couldn't see this morning. Still really bad. Hope it clears up soon so things can get back to normal.
Still, it's good just being here at the salt!

Take some rocks for your pockets and a lucky rabbit's foot so the wind will be gone.

The California wildfire smoke is thick. I cannot comment on what it's like on the salt but here in SLC we're experiencing terribly poor air quality. If it's gross here, it has to be worse there.

It smells like cigar or pipe smoke in the salt lake valley.

It is expected to clear out Saturday.
