I'll be lurking about in the shadows. Other than this it's unlikely you'll know I'm here.

    Where did the summer go?

  5. Got some time away so I decided to tinker on the engine a bit. Unfortunately my bronze intake hits the new belond exhaust! Anyone have any advice on what I should do? With the oil pan painted, the engine looks WAY better.

    Other
than the obvious, ie. sending the exhaust to me :), could you maybe make spacers to bolt in between?

Broke a stud (the last one) when trying to remove them. I needed longer ARP studs for my thomas head. Anyway, after 4 weeks, a broken ez out, the purchase of an magnetic drill press and carefully using a carbine burr and cyliner to drill it out, I finally was able to put the studs in.

The ARP studs are a lot straighter than the standard repop model a ones (go figure) and the head slid right on. (This is a mock up but couldn't help myself).

In the mean time I'm going to have to source spark plugs for the thomas as well as dist wires. Anyone have a good source for dist wires to go with a black cap mallory? Excited to get back from my work trip and get this banger running.

What is new and improved... I have an older one in my banger Mallory distributor, maybe the improved one will give me more power? :p

Good on you for your persistence and success, congrats !
I just went thru same broken stud BS , however I broke SEVEN, out of 14 !!!
Took me several months. My method…. Start with center punch and small drill to large drill. With shaky arthritic old beat up hands… well as you now know, you can’t afford to break a tool in the hole, eh !
Antway, I couldn't believe that 7:1 Winfield slipped right into place , with seven inserts and new studs.

If it was mine I'd remove 2 inches of pipe between the flange and the bends. Pretty simple job. If the outlet is too close to the engine you can take a few degrees of the start of the bend and slope the header away from the engine instead of running vertical.

It's a hotter coil and the module will not self-destruct if the key is left on.

Well that's cool. I'll have to remember to get the newer version next time I leave the key on.

  16. Looks like a copy of a Wright intake, took me years to find one. Like the print but all the literature I read on Winfields says the float bowls need to face forward to work properly. Can't say I ever saw a photo where they didn't.

I must have missed that part in the dealer catalog... where did you read this...? I agree that most, if not all, Winfield’s are mounted as you say, just not convinced that it would make much of a difference in my application.

Assuming that the typical carb orientation is relative to fuel level sensitivities, a vehicle typically produces much higher forces during braking, than either turning or accelerating. With the float bowl oriented toward the front during braking... the fuel level would raise in the float bowl preventing any fuel control issues. If the carbs were reversed, the fuel level during braking would lower the float level, potentially enough to cause flooding and engine stalling. I would absolutely agree that installing the float bowl to the rear would be a mistake, unless the vehicle and driver were very mild mannered.

I don’t think this will be an issue in my application, as this will be a T speedster with limited braking effort. I also will be using spring loaded needle and seats that will dampen the fuel level changes, and should allow more flexibility. I will look at how far the carb would have to be “tipped” before the fuel level would slosh onto the intermediate or high spray bar and report back...

Had nothing else better to do tonite...

Looks like it would take roughly a 45 degree fuel angle in the float bowl before leakage thru the intermediate/high speed spray bars would occur. I don’t suspect that my speedster will pull a full “G” during braking. I wonder if I will notice flooding during left/right turns tho...? I’m not scared off yet, will continue as planned. The manifold may end up hanging in the rafters... but I gotsta try sumpin! I can always go back to the typical elbows to mount the carbs over the top of the ports, but feel the plenum will provide noticeable benefit when it comes to tuning and overall performance

  22. Amen to that,

Wife says "I have some clothes here to donate"
Husband "why not just throw them away?"
Wife, "there are poor starving people who could use them"
Husband "anyone who could fit into your clothes surely isn’t starving"

  23. Went and looked thru all my Winfield notes. Only thing I could find was an indept article about Winfield carbs that I found online back in 2011 on older carbs. It stated float bowls should be mounted toward the front if possible. Not sure who wrote the article but as you said you should be fine.

  26. It's a bronze 1 of 1 intake made by Petes Speed Shop of AUS. It came with a bronze throttle arm as well.

Where are you located? I'd love to come and take some product photos of the intake / carbs when they are available!

  27. That's pretty smart!! Unfortunately my welder is on its way to texas to help my brother build his winery. Now to figure out what to do!!

Right there was a cheap answer that will work. Don't modify the exhaust.
