Features 39-40 Ford Sedans Done Right!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by gonzo, Apr 28, 2013.

  1. @jnaki, I dig the green sedan. I'm thinking that when I do a sedan, I am going with a standard MorDor. For the short time I had this 70's era survivor MorDor, I really enjoyed the easy access into the back seat. Made for throwing a cooler into the rear floorboard handy when going to car events. Much nicer than trying to stick one behind the seat in my coupe. Also was handy for hauling my buddies around the fairgrounds, too.

  2. pretty proud of this one. I used quite a few photos from this thread to help get me dialed in on the look and stance I wanted for it. Upholstery is coming this fall hopefully, but for now i'm driving the wheels off it.

    Hey B,

That is a nice 1940 4 door sedan. When our granddaughter was little, those extra doors would have been great as our modern safe station wagons had the extra doors for easy access. Her, her friends and just toddler stuff got the overflow from the trunk area. We have always like 40 Fords. My first ride in one was the red 1940 two door Buick powered sedan back before I bought my Flathead powered Sedan Delivery during high school.

An aside: We sold our 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery when our son was born. It was hard to put a baby car seat in the back cave and make it safe. Plus, it was very dark back there and we did not think he would like the cave. If we had a 4 door sedan back in those days we probably would have kept it for some time later. One thing the sedan delivery had over the sedans (2 or 4 doors) was easy access to the back for my shorter surfboards, locked in for safety. No more popping out the rear window for a longboard, like it was done in 1960-64.

Sedan delivery ownership for us was road trips for a couple of twenty somethings. No worries about who was in the back area…it was just us, the dog, and suitcases/sleeping bags, etc. The green 2 door sedan has all of the stuff we would like in this day and age, including A/C. Plus, our granddaughter is 15, so she does not mind the folding seat access to the back seat area. Currently, we are still contemplating that 2 door sedan. It would fit nicely in our small two car garage.

  4. Just be darn sure those rear doors are ALWAYS closed and locked! My too-many door had some severe damage from both rear doors being opened in flight. And a friend had both rear doors messed up on his Merc too-many door on one drive... He put a couple of friends in the back seat and didn't check the doors after they closed them; both sides simultaneously popped open at about 40 mph.
Another reason that I don't really like 4 doors....

She must make wide turns or be running air bags.

Spare chins or a good air ride system I would say. Nice look though.

Sounds like a good case for automatic door locks like the new cars have. I will have to come up with something for my convertible sedan even though the doors are not suicide doors they could still cause some damage if not properly secured.

Bringing this old thread up for 2 reasons. It should never leave the first 10 pages, and mine is back on the road! Don't know if it's "done right" but here's the specs: '39 Standard Tudor, bored & relieved "59" flathead, Merc crank, unknown cam with "400" stamped on the end, adjustable lifters, "crab" distributor, finned aluminum heads, 3 carbs, Speedway tube headers, exhaust out the back with no mufflers, early toploader with later gears, Sid's dropped axle, Speedway front spring, Vega box, tube shocks front & rear, Stock brakes, stock wheels / caps, 500/525s & 650s. Pretty sure I got this in '76 (age 13). Built mostly by teenagers in the late '70s. Painted by me in the early '80s. HOK candy brandywine (over gold) with apple red/tangerine/lime gold (over silver) flames. It shows it's age but I don't care. It was a gift from my late Father. It's a keeper.

I started my '40 up today! It's been resting for close to a year. Bad on me. It didn't take much to get it going and I had a fine time driving it around for an hour or so. Life has been really busy lately taking care of my 94 year old father and my cars have taken a back seat. That's life. But even though I haven't been paying them much attention lately they're never far from my mind.

If I was ever to own a Forty Sedan it would have to look like the one that was featured in an old Hot Rod magazine that used to have light green pages. Always loved that car, maybe in the future.
