Hello fellow hambers. Here I go again ,hat in hand asking for help. I have a 1962 econoline that I bought some years ago,I just spend some weeks going through it and I find myself almost ready to fire it. It has a 64 200 swapped in with an alternator already in. I have a stock almost uncut wiring system diagram,a clear wiring diagram,an aftermarket ignition switch,new starter relay and I have ordered a 1 wire alternator. I will worry about the charging system later. I tried wiring something quick to get a spark but was unsuccessfull. The 1962 ignition switch has 4 posts..the aftermarket only has 3.. should I start with a 4 post ignition switch?? Or will the aftermarket work?? I'm hoping with your guidance I can wire this thing myself otherwise I'll never learn. Thanks in advance
Can't help much about the ignition switch, but I have a alternator like i think you have. ( One wire Ford type with GM type internals?) It is super easy to wire, just one wire to positive. I used the original wire that went to the voltage regulator on my 56 F100. Easy peasy...
Oh yeah, not a bad idea to put a fuse as the wire is hot, mine is way off by itself away from any grounds and I've not added a fuse/breaker but prolly should.
You have a switch without the accessory position or maybe one that is to be used with a starter button.
I've got the wiring diagram fro the Ford 1 wire alternator in the shop. I'll post it when I get down there.
So the switch does not have a spring return start position? If so find a different switch or add a starter button.
Yes it does... I put 12v to the "batt" side of the switch then I turned it on to the "acc" part with 1 click of the key and I put a test light to it,it works. Then I click again for "ignition" and the light turns on. But when I click all the way to the last click where it would start and it feels a spring action,nothing happens... I will add a starter button for now... Should I draw 12v from the "acc" post of the ignition switch?
Ok I'll try not to muddy the water here. About the post asking if there should be two wires from the switch to run the ignition. On that Ford type starter solenoid/relay, the two small terminals should be marked S and R the S is the "trip" wire that would come from the key switch "start" terminal, and closes the relay to crank the motor. The R terminal is to bypass the Resister for ignition. There are some starter relays that look like this but are NOT FORD type relays and may be wired different inside but if the small terminals are marked with a S and a R, I would say it is a Ford type unit.
I have used "Ford" type relays that were marked "S" and "I", same deal as above, with the "I" terminal used to bypass the resistor for the ignition. Russ
YES YOU ARE RIGHT!!! "I" for the Ignition. was afraid I would muddy things up and I did! Thanks for catching it. Is it "R" on the GM type starter solenoids?
After looking at the switch I see 4 terminals. One in the middle and 3 around the edge with the shadow I can't read what they say.
If you don't know what the terminals are for, go and buy a cheap multimeter and check out the connections when you set it on the ohms scale. You should be able to find out how to wire up switches that are not labeled.
im just going to guess .middle should be batt . one acc one ign.,one starter .usually they are labeled . start comes on when turned all the way to the right , right !
You are going to love that 200 cubic in six in that van! I replaced a 144 with a 200 and 4.11 gears with a three speed overdrive! Excellent driving with good power. That 144 wouldn’t hardly get out of it’s own way! Bones
So when you are in the start position, no terminal becomes hot? The one that goes to the starter relay should be hot at the ignition switch when it is held in the start position.
Middle is usually start, I can see ign on post on right side of your picture, the other 2 should be marked also.
Ok!! Yes! I retested it just now. Middle is start. I have ACC,BATT,IGN and start.. I will give it a try tomorrow...today was a shite day at casa de iwanaflattie.
Yes. Unless it is mounted upside-down. If you hooked it up to the right side the coil would remain energized.
So I bought a gm 1 wire alt...I guess the wire goes to the posite post of the battery.? I also had visitors!!
