I always love the flame jobs, even better if they are slightly oddball! Seen at the CHRR at FAMOSO a few years back.

  9. I was looking through some of my old work and found this rendering of my own car(The 32 Chev in my Avatar) that I created while in the process of building it to see how the finished product might look. Some time later my daughter had it made into a 3' X 2' framed picture and gave it to me as a Christmas present which now hangs in my garage next to the finished car.

Here's a 1942 Chevrolet 1 1/2 ton a drew for the folks at a local brewery recently. It's Micron pens, Sharpie, and Posca white on toned gray paper.

    Hello,

The story of the hot rod guys from Hawaii bringing their Altered Coupe to the mainland during college is heartwarming. By going away to college, I thought I could rekindle the lost feeling of the old drag racing/hot rod days. If I had a project like the Altercd Coupe, the Fremont Dragstrip was just up the freeway from my Northern California apartment and college.

College is not for everyone and for the first time, I thought it was not for me. I longed for the old hot rod drag race days, the great times on our surfing adventure road trips and mountain/desert racing days. It was difficult to get going on the real purpose of getting ready for what lies ahead.

Those guys had something in common, had a goal and enjoyed their build as well as continuing their studies. That is an accomplishment. Even going to the drags at Fremont, visiting the GM factory and surfing at Santa Cruz, just did not do anything to spur me on to getting better grades.

Friendships were abound in college with all of the different people from all over the USA coming to school. It was a transitional period and if there had been a goal like a nice Altered Ford Coupe sitting in the garage and Fremont Drags just 10 plus mile away, it would have been a nice alternative.

Drawing during breaks from college studies helped somewhat, but that kind of dreaming just made me want to go back to Long Beach and get back to some comfortable surroundings. It worked out in the long run as I got my act together and made the grades for a transfer to my final college campus, just minutes away from our old cruising hot rod area in Long Beach.

The added bonus was that I met my girlfriend in a college class, had an excellent amount of fun going all over So Cal and up/down the coastline to the S.F. Bay Area. It worked out well and a few years later, she became my wife…what a title! 20 somethings looking at our future together.

As for the Hawaiian based, hot rod/drag race guys, more power to them for having something to keep the flame alive during those hectic college days of long hours and lack of sleep.
