So while not a cruise night saw this out cruising..spotted it while taking my daughter to work..and thankfully they were going to the same place..this car has a ton of Detroit History..it’s owner Ivy has passed on, but he bought it new…raced it with a hopped up 348…and then a hot 409. Last time I saw this car Ivy had a couple Wally’s he had won bitd and his scrapbook of old clippings from the local newspaper with his winning results out at Detroit Dragway, and pictures of him in his old Detroit neighborhood with his trophy’s in front of the car. He had black steel wheels, poverty caps, and cheater slicks on it..and when it fired up…everybody was staring in his direction..he used to come into my buddys Dad’s welding shop and get things repaired and we always asked about the 58..we heard he had passed and wondered what would happen to the car. ..thankfully his Sons are taking care of it beautifully and their Mom was out with them tonight. I think it made her happy to know what her Husband’s car, and skill as a driver and mechanic meant to someone like me..they put the wide whites and hubcaps back on…but when I got out I said that’s no 348…they smiled and I said “that’s Ivey’s car” I know that exhaust note anywhere…enough of my rambling…but this stuff means a lot to me..and I was really glad I got to see the car again..

I was perusing a small private junkyard locally about 10 years ago...
had been there as a young kid age 8, with my dad, trying to buy a Jeep straight 6 motor,
remembered the old timer showed me a '67 Pontiac GTO V8 he had just pulled from a '65 stick shift LeMans, someone had junked a car after swapping the motor in,
he had stored the engine under a bent car hood on the ground.
remembered drinking 10 cent cokes from the garage soda machine, with the returnable glass bottles...
so, I returned 40 years later, age 48, guess what the engine is still there,
under the same hood,
so what the coke machine...inside the garage,
so was the Jeep engine he wouldn't sell us, sitting on the floor...
not kidding...true story...
Dad and the old timer junkyard owner are long gone now...
so I bought the '67 GTO 400 engine carb to pan original numbers matching, $250
nephew was selling off what was left...
walked around a bit more,
saw a '58 Chevy 4 door...asked him what's in that ?
he says 348-4bbl
popped hood just a short block, otherwise everything was there, including the interior,
opened trunk there's the heads, intake, carburetor...etc...
only thing missing was the valve covers of course...
got the whole car for $300, hired a flatbed that day to drag it outta there...
some dentist bought the entire thing from me for $800 to use for parts,
for a restored car he had.
it was fun getting to look inside a W-motor, interesting mill
no combustion chamber, like a diesel...
some guy from Ohio bought the GTO engine for $1750 for a correct restoration GTO..
those were the days, my friends....now I'm 59....
that old timer also showed me a 390 Ford motor under another hood,
that was still there too...I wonder if it's there today ? I may go get it...
