Happen to have a couple gallons of new bottled vegetable oil I'm tired of looking at. Any uses in the auto world, 0r shop? Engines, hydraulics, cutting fluid, cleaning? I know it can go in diesels that are set up for it, don't have that.

I often use vegetable oil or mineral oil on things that should remain non-poisonous. It's not auto-shop specific, but random things come up (usually by request of the wife).

I also intend to build a waste oil heater for used motor oil this winter. I imagine it would also gobble up veggie oil.

Lol. Thanks for the reply though. It's an oddball question I know, probably should have just put in the garage tips thread.

Get a cooker, 20lbs of catfish/catfish fillets....corn meal and onions for hush puppies.....cabbage, pickles, onions mayo for slaw......save some oil for the skillet and cut up potatoes and onions for....taters and onions. You can even leave the peels on the potatoes, just cut 'em up and drop then in the skillet with the onions.
Sweep the garage, put on some tunes....get a ice chest full of your favorite beverage.....invite your friends.

you used to be able to pass it off to someone doing bio fuel but I haven't heard mention of anyone doing bio fuel for several years.
If someone had a waste oil heater it could be mixed in with the waste oil.

If you have an older diesel truck you could mix it in a bit a time with your regular fuel if you need to get rid of it.

I worked on a hydraulic elevator that used vegetable oil.
    The machine room smelled good.

Although not auto related --> I use old vegetable oil for:
    1) Chain saw bar oil
    2) Paper shredder oil.
It works great is these two applications

Lubricate o-rings. I would think one could use it as a lube when chasing threads.

Wonder how it would work cutting aluminum?

I've heard that if used in Diesel engines the side effect is getting chased by flocks of hungry seagulls.

  22. I have the most Oak trees and so do the most trimming in the neighborhood and that means I supply everyone with wood for the barbecue pits. As has been mentioned, all my wood is cut with vegetable oil in the chainsaws so it's safe for smoking meat.
But I only use a pint per year. A "couple gallons" would last a long time.

Inhibits rust. Any oil will work, he just may have had a supply of cooking oil to use. Old engin oil (let it settle some first) works; get an old paint brush and brush it on after using the blade. Works for garden tools, too.

Minor use- coat snow shovels, keeps snow from sticking and is safe for pets and other animals.

Back in early 2000's we had a salesman come into the shop and sell us a new "biodegradable" cutting fluid. He told us "this stuff is so safe that you could drink it" It was made from animal fats and other products and could be used in saw's, drill presses, tapping etc. anything where normal cutting fluid was used. After about two weeks we noticed that there were flies everywhere. After a month the shop was inundated with thousands of flies. We realized it was the cutting fluid that the flies were attracted to. We literally had dozens of fly strips hanging from the ceiling and gave every man a fly swatter. It took about two weeks to get back to normal.

You can add a few gallons to a tank of furnace oil in a regular home furnace with no ill effects.

For other uses, be aware that it will oxidize and polymerize with time, first getting sticky then forming solid chunks. When diluted in diesel the polymerizing rate drops to negligible however.
