Long time listener, first time caller. Here's a Shoebox sketched with Micron pens and Sharpie on marker paper.

    Hello,

Our high school days had plenty of different daily drivers. Anything from a 54 Chevy Bel Air custom to a funky 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was the norm. Some were powerful, for the time, Chevy sedans that were build for speed and street encounters. Some had drag racing experience and utilized tricks to stay on top for cruising to places in So Cal away from the weekly local drive-in restaurant hot spots. If a street encounter happened, the results were usually the same, with 6 tail lights going down the street ahead of the other car in the next lane.

But, one of our friends bought his first car and wanted to make it custom or fast or a combination of the two. His budget was low to scraping, but was anxious to get his teenage car in motion with all of the others. The choice of a pristine 1951 Pontiac two door sedan was great. The car was in great shape, he had no problems with it for the time he owned it.
upload_2021-7-16_4-57-46.png A similar look for a friend's 51 Pontiac Sedan...his first car in high school.

He wanted to have a nice car that everyone would look at and have the same admiration as the other hot sedans and coupes. So, we made his 1951 Pontiac special, in that it was the only 51 Pontiac with a custom floor shift mechanism and a tall curved shift lever that stuck up high enough to be seen from the outside.

It was a metal shop/auto shop project for me and I needed to do something different for a solid “A” grade. Weeks of measurements and a spare Hydramatic transmission made things a little easier. The final outcome was the classy floor shift lever with a white ball on top.

Over time, in our teenage hang around times, everyone had ideas about how we were going to customize our daily drivers. Some were realistic with full tuck and roll from our friendly TJ road trips. Of course, chromed reverse wheels were the simplest way to make a sedan look good. And finally, a nice paint job or some pinstriping to top it off any custom car look.
Then some ideas flourished with things that would be more intensive.

Well, the bottom line was our energies were spent on the transmission shift mechanism and tall curved floor shift lever. With that bringing in a ton of fun, much admiration from other teens and having a one of a kind Pontiac sedan was very humbling. Now, we were thinking of the next step.

We had dabbled in flames, scallops and pinstriping, with not much success. The attempts on other cars just did not have “the look.” The practice drawings on flat metal looked ok, but it just did not have the pizazz. The idea that scallops would make the 51 Pontiac look fast, although the speed encounters on the famous “Cherry Avenue Dragstrip” were lots of fun and often times hilarious.

So, we talked about different styles of flames or scallops. (ABOVE) This is my version with his white two door sedan. If my friend had the available cash, it would have looked cool(er) with mag wheels and scallops on the stock white paint. But, if we went one step beyond, there is nothing that would draw attention like a bright red paint job with a multi color scallop design. To me it just looked fast or at least moving fast.

  20. Thank you gentlemen. This time of year, people are busy so finding time to do this is more difficult. :)

On a sad note, I was contacted by a local funeral home to "do something" on a casket for a 8 year old boy who loved the Pixar "Cars" movie. IMG_0267.JPG IMG_0273.JPG

  27. Cool shot. What's the history with that lil' A? I saw the John? Cowling 'A' in AHRR back in '74 or '75. I loved it.
    Is that it?
