Projects Yard find 1941 Ford pickup

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris, Jul 12, 2021.

  1. If anyone remembers, late last year I nabbed a all apart hot rod 1940 Ford pickup semi local to me and had big plans for it. Towards the end of that thread, I mentioned that my brother now owned the truck. He really wanted it, and although I didn’t want to sell it, finally caved and sold it to him but still itched for one. I’ve been looking since for a reasonable project (even an old original), but man 40-41 pickups are popular and prices for even basket cases is kind of crazy.

I found one in N Seattle I loved, even sent a friend that was local to go check it out. But it was simply a lot of money and I just couldn’t justify it, no matter how perfect it was

So last Thursday I put a post on Instagram, that I was casually looking for a 40-41 Ford pickup. Friday was our big Spokane Swap Meet, and about 8 different people said “why don’t you go buy the one sitting on Crestline with the 4 sale sign on it??” I had no idea what anyone was talking about and pictured a junky cab on a frame in someone’s yard for way too much money. But a few hours later, a buddy of mine who told me about it, text me a pic. “Holy shit!” I flew up there and was blown away. Not only a 41 pickup, but also a 39 deluxe coupe sitting along side a busy road with a for sale sign. Right next door to my grandmas!!! I checked the truck out, guy came out and told me to make an offer. I had some cash from selling at the swap and said “I got this on me” he said “SOLD”. So went and grabbed the trailer, threw some front tires/wheels on it and drug it on the trailer with 3 locked brakes. Guy was super cool, even offered me some pizza. The coupe was already sold, I’m kind of bummed I missed it but also relieved lol

The 41 is complete, has some common rust but is very strait. Has a early chev in it, radiator, MC, powerglide and chev rear. Looks like they parted out a 55-57 chevy for the running gear. Stock front end with split wishbones. Last licensed in 1969.

got it home that night and yesterday got the 3 stuck wheels un-stuck. Doors/hood/windows all work as they should, decent start to a neat truck. And in my budget! It needs it all but that’s ok. That’s kind of what I wanted.
So my plan? Keep the chev, soup it up, stock Ford three speed and banjo, lower it as far as possible, patch it up, give the interior a make over a drive it. Beater trucks are my favorite.
    Enjoy

Good on you Chris and shame on you Chris! Seems you need to visit your Grandma more often. :)

Second '41 PU I bought had a SBC in it. Traded that one off years ago for the interior in my '40 Std Tudor.

I really planned on having a booth at the swap meet but was bed ridden for nearly a week because of my back. Maybe next year.

That truck was someone’s pride and joy at one time. Looks like it was well taken care of before parked, running board and bedside, fenders, etc not all beat up.
    Heck of a find.

When you get around to it let me know what pressure plate and clutch they used. Supposedly a 50 Merc will bolt right up.

Nice find Chris! You know I have a thing for these trucks and that one is in very nice condition. Looking forward to another 41 ford truck thread.

Since everything seems to find you, if you run across a bed and fenders I'm in need of them for my 40. Wouldn't mind a cheap frame too. Otherwise I'll be fixing mine where it's rotted out.

  17. And you didn't buy the dune buggy and Pontiac Sunfire?! Those two door Sunfires are getting to be pretty rare.

I am more than a little jealous:( Probably 60 years ago as a kid growing up on a farm in Iowa, my dad had an Advanced Design Chevy he'd bought new in 49 but the neighbor had a pickup about like yours, it was noisy:) I loved it, and I was stuck driving in dad's almost new truck, some good memories:)

  24. Who let's a 1939 Ford coupe sit after buying it ????

  25. I KNOW RIGHT?!?!?! My 41 was missing front wheels and tires and 3 of the 4 drums were frozen…AND it was over 100 degrees and I still had it on my trailer within 2 hours of buying it.

That's really bitchin', it's even an old hotrod and not just a stocker. Looking forward to seeing it come together.

I guess the state of Washington is full of HAMB friendly cars and everyone else just doesn't want to take the 3,000 mile one trip to collect them. Chris do you keep a numbered list of cars & bodies you have found over the years?

  29. The Swenson horseshoe strikes again! Good find dude! Though that one over on my side is bitchin too. I bet this one will end up just as cool.
