A great grass roots vintage drag race took place yesterday in Hillsboro, WI. Classes for bangers and Flathead cars with a few exhibition passes and a car show that lined the pit area. I took my T Roadster #23 and it ran fairly well. Only loss was in the finals in the V8 class against a very quick belly tanker. I took a few photos and will try to post videos. Watch for this event in the future, Bob and the gang that put it on are trying to make it an annual event.
Here are a couple decent pictures I got. I have a video of the exhibition cars, but I dont know how to load.
You definitely held your own, was a cool event to watch! Cant wait til next year! Still can't get over watching racecars and hearing tractors. Fun stuff
Good stuff! Thanks for sharing! @UNSHINED 2 to post a video you need to put it on YouTube and then put the embedded link into your hamb post
This was a blast! The #7/8 T is me, my car wasn't running quite right but it went well enough to make passes and I'll be back next year with a vengeance! The area is really cool too, it's a defunct WWII airstrip in a little town in hilly Amish country, it's really the perfect background for something like this to happen. I want to get the word out about this event for next year, there's definitely room for it to grow. Here's a pic I stole from someone else, just to prove I ran.
For the people who hadn't heard about the event, it's eighth mile drags on an old WWII airstrip. There's classes for flathead 4 bangers and V8's up to 1953, although a flathead 6 car did run with the 4's since there wasn't really a class for them. The classes were for fenderless 1937 and older cars, 4 and 8, then one for early motorcycles and there was going to be one for "doorswingers" (basically anything flathead powered after '37 with fenders on it) but the '40 Ford coupe shown above ended up racing with the other V8 cars, I think if they get a bigger turnout next year they'll break them up a bit more. It's not quite TROG rules but it's similar, a few of the cars there either competed there or were built to compete there, so no modern drivetrains or parts allowed. If you have a period built car that is powered by some kind of flathead engine and doesn't have any modern parts on it, there'd be a class to race it in. The trend was definitely for fenderless flathead powered roadsters, though. It was really great. 2020 was supposed to be the first year but Covid delayed it, and this one was a kind of short-notice trial run that I feel like went really well. I'm already looking forward to next year.
My only loss was in the finals, still have to build something faster. . That bellytanker was quick out of the hole, and there wasn’t enough track to catch him. Fun stuff.
I think thw Tanker was gonna be tough to beat no matter what. You guys put on a fun show. I'd try to build one for next year, but I couldn't even come close to competing. Its right in my backyard.
A really cool pic from this past weekend that someone shared on Facebook, this one is especially good because there's nothing real modern in the background anywhere. Also will mention here that it's confirmed this is on for next year, same weekend (Saturday of Iola) so if someone has a period correct flathead powered car you can plan ahead for this.
Awesome event for Vintage Greatness...what a great showing...Very Hamb proud at that...one not to miss in my opinion...
There were just two motorcycles there. JOHN with his 90 cu in Knucklehead and me with my 45 cu in 1962 KR factory race bike. I beat him the first race and the second race I only had about half throttle before the cable came loose in the carb and lost to John. Back at the pits I fixed the problem and we ran the last race. I got another win with my flathead against an overhead valve engine twice my size. It was a good day and JOHN and I are good friends! Gary
