Looking for information or pictures of this trans with a hurst competition plus on it. Thanks for any help.
I don't want to sound rude but dude, we have to have more info than that, What did it come out of? Photos of it with clear decent resolution photos of casting numbers. High quality and decent size photos and all the info you can provide get far better answers. That means clear and decently lit photos that our old eyes can actually see as most of the guys who are going to answer are over 50. Here is an old thread on that trans. Ford 3-spd + OD toploader manual transmissions? | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
Trans look something like this? Can't help on the shifter but this is advertised as a 4 speed with 4th being O/D.
Standard Hurst or 4 speed shifter should fit . Just flip 3-4 gear lever on trans . OD is where 3rd gear is on the 4 speed .
Had one of those behind my Yblock. Worked fine, but real low (like 3.2?) first and .8 od was not a great combo for me. Shifter worked as shown above.
Buddy of mine has one behind a stroked out 351 hotted up heads and all the trimmings. 3.25:1 Trac Loc. Pretty nice gear spread in his application. 6sally6
Actually Mickey I see what they did. Here's the factory van shifter and I'm sure the truck is the same - not sure if the Granada is bolted to the back like the vans.
The 3+1 is a toploader with third gear as overdrive. Flipping the shift lever swaps the 3-4 pattern to direct-overdrive. Regular 4 speed in top image, 3+1 in lower image. Note the forward most lever position. The 3+1 can be identified by a bulge on the passenger side of the transmission, to clear the bigger countershaft gear to get an overdrive ratio.
Per Phill934's post in another thread on these transmissions. From another forum: Two versions of the Top-Loader 4-speed were available. The cast iron version, called the RUG, has external linkage and is a direct swap for non-overdrive units. These are found in '77-'78 Granadas and Monarchs, '78-'79 pickup trucks and '78-'87 vans. They normally had internal ratios of 3.29:1, 1.84:1, 1.00:1 and .80:1. The aluminum case version found in '79-'83 Mustangs and Capris is called the SROD, has internal shift linkage, an input shaft that is 11/16" longer than a normal Top-Loader with a shifter location 19" from the mounting flange. These usually had ratios of 3.07:1, 1.72:1, 1.00:1 and .70:1. SROD's also came in '80-'83 pickup trucks. These are the preferred trans for early Mustangs as they have the same length input shaft and shifter location (15" from mounting flange) as a normal Top-Loader. Two different ratio sets were available: 3.01:1, 1.78:1, 1.00:1 and .79:1 or 3.25:1, 1.92:1, 1.00:1 and .78:1.
Thanks. I have one. Thinking about using it. Currently running 275 gears and a 303 trans Sux. Fun on the intestate but horrible on back roads. I have a set of 350 gears. May look for a 325 gear set.
Ex father-in-law had one in a pickup. I had rode in the truck a few times with him and noticed that thing made a lot of noise in O/D if I remember correctly. Anyway I mentioned the noise to him and he just though that's the way it was, so I said let me that a look at it. With a little diagnostic I was sure the rear main shaft bearing was bad, so I pulled the transmission in his gravel drive and set it on the tailgate tore it down and replaced the bad bearing. Put it back in the truck and let him drive it, I believe he though I was a Saint.
I’d love to have one of those for the 351 in my O/T E-250! Then I would just have find a pedal assembly for said van!
Had one behind a 300 in a 79 van. Screwed up when I ordered it new, so it came through with a 2.75 gear, and was almost undriveable below 70 in overdrive. Changed to a 3.50 after 130k miles and it was ok...no barn burner, but ok for me. I the 170k miles that I owned it, I replaces the bearings twice and flipped the countershaft. It was popping out of gear on decelerations again on decel again when I sold it. Others I knew with the same trans had similar experiences.
The one I have is known as a Single Rail Over Drive ( SROD) , the shifter mounts directly to the tail shaft , no linkage Rods . I need a shifter if anyone has any parts laying around . The countershaft wears in these trans more than in a standard 4 speed because OD is where 3rd normally is on the countershaft , thus the countershaft is spinning loaded in OD
SROD - single rail over drive - there was the TOD - top loader overdrive that was put in trucks about 1980-82 ? The top is similar to the Jeep top that some look for.....it's what's going in my 39 coupe.
