Event Coverage Miller Reunion at the Milwaukee Mile

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by pprather, Jul 5, 2021.

  1. This annual event is this week, July 9 & 10. I plan to be there a while on Friday. I'll be with the number 66 Indy racer that finished 17th in the 1934 Indy 500.
This old racer is still competitive today in pre-war vintage racing.
It's a two seater, so bring your courage and go for a ride along on this historic race track.

Sounds like a great event. Hopefully, they won't get rained out. Wish I had the time to go.

I attend this event almost every year. It is unbelievable to see so much history in one place that actually moves, these guys run the cars on the famous Milwaukee Mile track to see and hear them is like going back in time.

I've only gone once. I was completely unprepared for how fantastic it is.

I may have to get my rear to Milwaukee this Friday. From the photos I've seen from past years, it looks amazing!

  13. Not pics, video! The sound of the cars is the best part. :)

Bucket list event for me. I'd like to show up with the Bill of Sale from Ira Vail for his 122 MILLER that he raced in the 1924 INDY 500, and all the paper work that went with racing it in the 1925 season.

I won't have mine done this year. I will shoot for the 2022 event.

  17. Sorry, no sound recordings, but there were at least half a dozen early '60's roadsters running around the track.

Here are a couple photos of older Indy cars.

Here are a few pictures from today at the Milwaukee Mile. The weather was perfect, not like other years when it was 90 and humid.

Got a chance to ride in the 66 again today. Great drive. Time ran out or I could have had a chance to drive it. Next year for sure.

This is one of the Miller Gulf Oil engines built for the Indy 500.
It is on display at the AACA museum in Hershey Pa.

Here's some photos I took Friday at the Miller Meet.

    DSCN3565.JPG
The HAL powered Iddings Special had some nice custom touches.
    DSCN3566.JPG
Nice clean 90° drive for the magneto.
    DSCN3567.JPG DSCN3568.JPG
How about this hand crafted oil cooler?

    DSCN3578.JPG
The 1923 Indy 500 winner owned by Harry C. Stutz and driven by Tommy Milton
    DSCN3576.JPG
Front axle fabricated from forged ends silver soldered onto steel tubing, and custom forgings for the spindles too.
    DSCN3577.JPG
I guess the lever on the steering wheel might be for timing adjustments on the fly.

    DSCN3625.JPG
Russell Snowberger ran the Comet at Indy in 1932 with Hupmobile power that he highly modified himself.
The race engine had a custom aluminum head, finned aluminum side cover that increased the cooling capacity, four Winfield carburetors and I imagine the cam was custom and the ports had been reworked too. At the end of the '32 race season he had returned the engine to Hupmobile and it had been sold off by the factory in 1933. That engine wound up in the Bonneville Hupp that ran 146 mph on the salt.

That oil cooler looks like its a airplane oil cooler, the early N3N airplane, predecessor to the Stearman had a small cooler like that was popular on the early sprint and dry lakes cars.

The Blue Crown Special won Indy in 1947 running a 270 Offy in a front wheel drive chassis designed by the great draftsman/engineer Leo Goossen. Emil Diedt built the car for Lou Moore.

    Front wheel drive detail.
    DSCN3582.JPG
These Halibrand discs were added to the car later, I think it was the early '50's when Ted first produced his.

    Here are some detail shots-
    DSCN3627.JPG
More Halibrand calipers on a '50's-'60's Indianapolis roadster. DSCN3583.JPG The so-called lobster caliper by Halibrand, it gave much more pad area.
    DSCN3571.JPG
Nice custom air horn on a Winfield. DSCN3573.JPG
Honestly I do not know what six cylinder this is, can anybody ID it? The cam covers do not look Miller to my eye but it does have really detailed castings for the magneto and steering box supports, the type of detail Miller prided himself on. It has six Miller barrel throttle carbs and Harry also produced carburetors with the typical throttle plate. DSCN3574.JPG
    Another view.

    A very nice header.

Built by Northwest great Rolla Volstedt it went on to a number of different owners and many stellar drivers. DSCN3595.JPG
There's nothing like hand lettering, hopefully sign painting will not become a lost art.

The Detroit Gasket Special owned by a friend of HAMBer @pprather .
    DSCN3586.JPG
Parnelli Jones 1963 Indy ride, he won that year and took the flag at Indy a total of six times.
    DSCN3587.JPG
Unknown to me, but a great looking car.
    DSCN3630.JPG
The Bowes Seal Fast laydown roadster driven by AJ Foyt.
    DSCN3631.JPG
I cut off most of AJ's autograph but both he and engine wizard George Bignotti had signed the restored car. The term 'laydown' comes from the engine being layed on it's side and that provided a lower frontal area and concentrated more weight on the left side of the car. Below the injector horns is a large crankcase breather.
    DSCN3628.JPG
The paint and lettering was the work of Dean Jeffries.

I am in awe of the style and detail that most of these early race cars exhibit. DSCN3599.JPG
Long time collector Bob McConnell owns the Miller powered Red Lion car.
    DSCN3597.JPG
Mechanical brakes on the Red Lion, you can just see a clevis and brake rod in front of the axle bell.
    DSCN3604.JPG
A lot of early Ford suspension components here but are those aftermarket brakes? The axle housing looks small, maybe a quickchange?
    DSCN3606.JPG
Same car, it's a three springer and was very nicely detailed
    DSCN3607.JPG
One of ten, a 1935 Miller/Ford Indy car, the Bohnalite heads are reversed for the front wheel drive chassis.
    DSCN3608.JPG
The picture doesn't show a lot , but lower left is the green bell housing area of the block and the aluminum casting is the front wheel drive gear case.
    DSCN3609.JPG
One of the experimental Strombergs designed for the Indy effort, I see Miller influence with the single, large throttle plate and four bolt mounting pattern. Some switched manifolds and carbs to conventional 97's for the race.
