Technical Where did you mount your horn on your hot rod or custom?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Jul 6, 2021.

  1. Assuming you actually have a horn.:D

I bought a aftermarket Harley Davidson horn that resembles the type that was originally mounted on the front forks, I didn't like the chrome so I sandblasted the cover and painted it black, I mounted it on the firewall. HRP

  2. Mine is down low on the front of the right side motor mount.
It is also a motorcycle horn. I was having trouble finding something loud enough to get respect, especially at highway speed.

So, I Googled 'loud motorcycle horn'. They had a high tone and low tone horn. I only had space for one, so I think I chose the low tone.

Yes, it is loud enough to get the attention of other drivers.

1932 Chevy - motorcycle horn mounted in the hole where the hand crank went in.
1933 Chevy - car horn mounted under the angled part of the floor board.
1934 Chevy - aftermarket small horns mounted behind and below the grill shell.

Any one notice any difference in noise inside the vehicle depending on where the horn is mounted? Seems under the tie board and under the radiator would have pretty different noise levels?

been thinking about this on our model A project so I’m Curious

I have the same horn on my merc. I mounted it on the bracket that goes from the drivers side fender to cowl/ firewall.

  12. I put them where Chevy put them 89 years ago...Trumpet horns are loud as hell(something you need these days) and I think they look cool.

I guess I can't say you have a herd mentality, or can I? Those horns are a statement for sure!

I had four Studes for parts, not one of the horns worked, a trip to You Pull It in Omaha netted horns from a Chevy Pickup, mounted them in the org horn location, works fine, the 38 uses the horns (and ignition switch) from a 60's Merc Comet I parted out 50 years ago, it was a two hardtop bucket seat car four speed with a 302, transmission was broke.....it would be a $2K car for someone to build:( Sorry I got distracted with my story:) Edit....a few days after I wrote the preceeding.the wife and I went out for supper (ice cream:) in the Studebaker and on the way a deer appeared off to the left so I "tooted" at him, my wife said "that's a terrible sounding horn" she likes the one in grandpa's 64 Ford Fairlane much better:)

  16. Mid-80's Cadillac 4 tones. Over 100 db. Just behind the grill pointed forward. Gets attention.

My '36 Ford pickup has just enough room between the grille and the radiator for a Stewart-Warner aooga horn pointed straight down. My henry J has a disc horn pointed down right behind the front crossmember sort of under the radiator.

Just been through that exercise. I had a nice pair of "sea shell" wind tone horns that were jus too big for the engine bay of my AV8. Mounted under the passenger side foot well just in front of the battery box. Sounds like the noise gets out OK.

Since I'm cheap, I bought a twin horn setup from a newer ford car at the junkyard. I mounted it on the radiator support for my '39 Chev, and pointed them down to avoid any water or moisture from being forced into them. Really loud, and I like that, as it gets attention when needed.

@Joe Blow and others running the disc shaped motorcycle horns. Do they sound like the higher pitch beep/buzz from a late 80’s Honda? Everything I can find online to hear them they all sound like that.

I always like the deeper tone of a horn from the 50’s but like the looks of the bike horns. Wondering if there’s a happy middle ground

Tim, it's not a real high pitched horn but not a real deep tone either......somewhere in between. Originally had 12 volts on it and it was ear splitting. I gutted a Blue Streak horn relay and put a voltage reducer in it.....now it's about right. Mine sounds similar to this tone wise....but quite a bit louder.

  23. With a dropped headlight bar on my Model A’s, I needed to mount the horn under the floorboards.

Replaced these with dual trumpet horn’s and bracket on my 38 Coupe pointing down to keep moisture out. Installed behind lower grill valance, loud as hell…….but I like it. 932DA7BD-3DAF-43C5-B3B8-AB81A357668C.jpeg EEF99589-D8FD-4311-AED2-4459A966A2BD.jpeg

Firewall. It's a 6V horn with 12V power. Makes a lot of noise.

Have a couple hot rods with the horn mounted on the right front of the engine block using a factory tapped hole...high & dry...works great!

Picked up this ahhooga horn locally and took it apart to clean it up and add some paint:

Then mounted it on the lower right hand side of the engine. It sounds great!
