Build your million dollar house next to a fabled racetrack then demand the track be demolished.

Larsen and Cummins 1929 Model A RPU

    Hello,

My brother and I have always liked roadster pickups. It was a real roadster feel with the ability to carry stuff in the back. Since we liked a Model A Coupe as our first attempt to modify an old car to make it into a hot rod, we fell into a Model A aura. That lasted until several years later when we saw a 1940 Willys Coupe sitting in an older lady’s backyard.

But, the images of any cool looking Model A coupe, roadster or RPU with or without fenders always gets a thumbs up in my book. One thing it has to have is the stock grille. The design from the factory was good and the style just looks right. Not big blob of a grille shell like the 32 Ford. (don’t get in a twiddle dee state… we all have our choices)

So, when I found a photo of the Fred Larsen and Don Cummins roadster pickup, it was love at first sight. It was modified to a point and yet, kept the cool Model A look. Lean and mean…

The Larsen & Cummins roadster at the Riverside 1/2 mile drags in Sept of '59. The car set a gas roadster record of 149 mph.

#14 is shown at the June 1958 Rusetta Timing Association Meet at El Mirage.

Thanks @HEMI32 for finding the original photo from the original photo collection and not one from an add on watermark.

In further research, it was mentioned that the roadster pickup had some gold highlights. Without a color photograph to go to for a reference, here is what the detailing would look like with a Blue RPU with gold highlights.

In any version, the style and look of the Model A roadster pickup speaks “hot rod” in all languages.

    This weekend’s theme:
