Event Coverage Glory Days Byron, Illinois 7-16 thru 18,

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rusty1, Jun 30, 2021.

  1. Glory Days at Byron Dragway is only about 2 weeks away, who all is going to show up?
This is a fantastic event....Friday & Saturday very good and into the evening drags, Sunday not as many drag cars left but still entertaining.

I've been there as a spectator on Saturday before but would only be able to make Friday this year. Is the turnout on Friday still good?

My son and I are planning to go as a spectator. We’ll be driving a hotrod and will be camping friday and Saturday. This will be our 5th year tradition. My 12 yr old loves it.

I'm seriously considering the 6+ hour trip to Byron for Friday 7/16 drags and swap meet. I'm as interested in the swap meet as the drags themselves since I'm collecting parts to build a mild 60's type FED. I'm hoping the swap meet is typically well stocked with things that might be appropriate?

  14. swapmeet is huge, lots of neat stuff; several drag cars broke stuff in the past, got the parts needed in the swap, and continued racing, can't beat that.
most shows/swaps this year are having record turnouts, people want to get out....a couple of years back the swapmeet overflowed into the show car area and the show cars overflowed into the camping area.
...a few years back there were 9500 spectators at this show over the 3 days.

Thanks, rustyl. Just so I have an idea of what to expect, I'm just guessing the swap meet is in the pit area and the car show is in some other separated area? I've never been there so I'm a bit curious about the layout.

Talked with one of my nephews this morning who lives in the Chicago metro area. He sounded interested in meeting me for a day together, but now it might be Saturday instead of Friday. He used to work for a gentleman who had a drag car called "Mean Green"(I think?) back in the late 70's or early 80's and thought they had gone to Byron with the car. By what I've seen of Byron racing video it seemed it matched what he described as the strip being a very slight down-hill pitch and then a slightly up-hill shut down area. Is that correct?

  16. Your track description sounds accurate.

The swap and car show are both behind the spectator grandstands. The pit is on the other side of the track. Admission gets everyone access to the entire facility.

  17. and if you pay the spectator fee the swap is free to sell yer stuff ,... think spectator . fee is $15 on Friday, $20 on Sat. $15 on Sun. if the weather is good, Saturday is the big day for racing but Friday is very good also..think they race into the nite both Fri & Sat..by Sun, a lot of racers pull out that drove from farther away. I go up all 3 days and enjoy even the Sunday action.
My club & I run the swapmeet section for the event for the track.

My son now has a baseball tournament this same weekend with games Saturday and Sunday. He’s pitching so, not sure we can skip it. We may be missing this event. What a drag...

It keeps sounding better and better. Barring any unexpected events I plan to be there either Friday or Saturday, just not sure yet which day! Looking forward to it.

Approximately 98 miles southeast of Byron. Rained most of the night
and through the morning. Hoping for satisfactory weather for Friday.
Good luck to you guys who are entered.

It's been nice and dry at the strip. Some dark clouds, but they passed right over. Supposed to be really good weather tomorrow, and Saturday.

This pic is a quick nod to Slayer (Eric) and his dad Rex, two dedicated racers.
This is Rex's photo but I have to admit I played with it a little bit for my own
amusement (Rex and I go back a long way). While I dig
    both cars, the Valiant
knocks me out. It certainly isn't a common car and it's got a great look.

Just heard about new restrictions, from a day or two ago, related to Covid about Chicago, and maybe the State of Illinois, and traveling to and/or from Missouri and Arkansas. I've read a couple things and watched a couple news videos and it doesn't seem like there are any restrictions that would affect or restrict me driving from Missouri to Byron for the day of drag racing tomorrow (Saturday 7/17) and then returning to Missouri tomorrow night? If someone has any info about how broad the restrictions are and how it might affect me, I'd appreciate a heads up. I sure don't want to get stuck in Illinois (no offense meant).
