Did the same on my '55 last year. Not as much original paint left as on that cool black Fairlane though.

These pictures blow my mind. Today we have paints that contain stuff that is ten times worse than the old paint and I doubt that in 50 years time the new paint could be polished up like that. On a side not is there any paint on the market that is comparable in looks and durability to the old stuff.

Oh man does that make me miss my '63 Fairlane. Also black, and mostly original paint that polished up beautifully. Ford's enamel then seemed to have a hint of blue.

You did great but when I saw 12 hours........wow, that's a lot of work but your results are great. I am getting my wife's grandfathers 64 Fairlane driveable,,,,,,,,,,,,,, IMG_3717.JPEG after a 20 plus year hiatus and it's paint needs polish, just not sure if I want to do that.

From the title, I expected a weed related post, anyhows good job. Paint nowadays comes with an expiry date apparently, 10 years and it separates and falls off.

Could have went way longer if I wanted to keep working out the scratches, she's not perfect by any means but she's definitely way better. Plus is a good reason to spend time outside with some beers

  15. Hey vtx1800,
That Fairlane looks so perfect for a buff up.
IMHO, get it all shiny first.
It will make you smile every time you look at it,
and it will make your work getting it road worthy
    go a lot faster!
    Ask me how I know!

Yes it is. My uncle bought it new in '65 the year he graduated high school.
27,XXX original miles, all black interior is still perfect except for carpet and front seat bottoms. 4 speed.
I inherited it after he passed unexpectedly 2 years ago.

My first drivable car was a 58 Chevy Impala, with original paint (yellow). was a lacquer paint but was all dull white with yellow. I bought the car Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday, rubbed in out with hand rubbing compound, what a difference, a full gloss, smooth, soft yellow. car look great, I on the other hand had quite a sunburn.
