Funny this thread should come up the day after I took the photo below during a little road trip to Danville, Illinois. I thought as a two door this would be killer but it was kool to see just the same.
Myself, I would never put a lot of money and work into one but I'm sure glad that there are people who do. Those are the cars that my wife and I stand and look at for hours when we see one at a show or museum. The style, the details - they are rolling art.
This is truly a prime example of kool. Yeah, it's large and may have been considered a family car but this one sure jumps out at you.. That's a looker.
Dad had a 60 Dart Seneca with the slant six. It was a slightly smaller car than the Matador/ Polara but not by much. The problem with these cars is the had a terrible body rust problem. I recall wheel wells dog legs, door bottoms fender bottoms, the area above the headlamps, where the door handles and door mirrors attached and where the trim clips penetrated were all shoeing rust by the end of the second year, and rusted through by the end of the third year. It was probably exaggerated here in the north east with long Winters and lots of salt but you could almost hear them rust. Not sure about the Matadors, but the Darts were unibodies, so by the time 65 rolled around, the Dart was losing it suspension mounts, body mounts and general structural integrity. Door hinges were pulling out, muffler hangers needed to be relocated out side mirrors falling off, outside door handles pulling out. Never saw car deteriorate that fast.
I think they had extra sheet metal and hung the body out past the wheels too far. you could cut a foot off the back of the car and still not touch the fins
That Polara looks a lot like my Matador. lol The 1 option it should of had was a swivel seat. They did opt for the Electric seat. Something tells me this car was special ordered it with all the options it has. Going to hopefully fire it up this weekend. I'm going to order the Chrysler info to see what they say about it.
For a bunch of Ferd and Chebby guys ya'll sure made a lot of comments. Just kidding. There is an ass for every seat.
That was an amazing car, and its always amazing how the injection of liquid cash, is an irresistible element! I hope the new owner will really do that car justice on how ever he decides to deal with it.
Never ever seen one before. Good for you, that looks like a great very rare car to get back on the road.
