You mean they all didn’t come that way before ‘64? I’m kidding! My ‘46 and ‘50 Chevrolets and the ‘52 and ‘53 Buicks all have the column shift. I wouldn’t want it any other way. I may change my mind when I’m old.

I got my Chevy in 1988 it was 3 on the tree, i could barely drive a standard never mind a column shift, that's how she lost her original grill ,I was trying to back out of my drive way and rolled forward and hit my 65 impala, and bent the 54s grill and upper grill bar, ...I wish i kept the 6 and the 3 speed in her,but i was young ,dumb and full of...lol well you know.

There's a couple of teenagers in the neighborhood building a 55 chevy big window with the help of their Dad. They got it as a complete but non running neglected truck with a 235 and a 3 on the tree. They asked me about putting a V8 with an automatic in it . I knew they also had a pretty nice 283 in their stash and told them it would be bad ass with the little 4BBL small block with a 3 on the tree. I went in my stash and gave them a V8 bellhousing and mounts. I also told em about my dropped axle I got from Sids.... What can I say ? I'm a sucker for youngsters building Hot rods...

Although currently a 4spd (I’ve switched back and fourth half a dozen times) for years I had the stock Chevy 3spd OD on the column. I may have even street raced a few times leaving the Burbank Bob’s Big Boy late at night - talk about a sleeper......I may have had a 4.56 posi behind that stock 220 hp 283/3 spd column shift combo.

The black 57 will probably not go back to a 3spd but there is 3spd OD plans for the 9 passenger!

Count me in on this. It's a great way to cruise, and it befuddles the hell out of the kids.

    Here's mine!
    65 Rambler with a flat 6 and a 3 on the tree.
Fun little car to cruise around in but, not very comfortable on long stretches. 20210516_124736.jpeg 20210201_123630.jpeg

I had a 1950s Borgward that was 4 speed on the column. It was a fun car to drive, German built car looked somewhat similar to a Karmann Ghia.

Yep, I love a three on the tree. Putting together a 61 Impala right now with one on it and planning to keep it.

Looks like quite the gap between column and steering wheel. Does the horn work?

Not cool growing up......Cool as hell now!
I've always know it as "3 on the tree". I never understood the term "Straight-shift" --> nothing straight about it.....

  17. Cool collection! I've always thought Hudson made the best looking shifter knobs... nice design and attention to detail, and probably not the easiest to manufacture at the time. I like 'em!
