  2. I'm still the same with either an Elco (60 of course) or a Panel truck. Depends how close you are to the beach, I walked there with my boards when I was a kid.

My #3 car was a used 57 2D Ford stationwagon, after building a hot rod 28A and a full custom Henry J,that first wagon as a every day driver, started something! I've owned 18 wagons over the years from that first used 1957 wag in 1964. Used them wag's for everything from beach, camping, tow car for race car n trailer, too every thing inbetween. Yup,a few had the fake wood design too,it's the way they came, but I never have owned a new car!!

  5. As cliché as a woodie might be, a 1940 woodie would be tough to beat. Maybe a RPU or touring?

I was the guy who asked Ryan if he would be considering a woodie give his new local. I have been a longtime woodie fan of every make and model. Unlike Ryan I am totally smitten with the beach vibe woodie theme. To me it is the epitome of escape-ism and what better place to escape to than Hawaii. As for me this is my current project, and while I have no reason to plant a surfboard on top it is sure gonna look bitchin when I haul a Christmas tree home this year.

stick boards on top and run up the beach

    Hello,

One of our favorite So Cal places is the Santa Barbara coastline area. We have been coming up here with our family for plenty of vacations. Our surf adventures were plentiful in and around the rugged coast line in the early 60s. In the mid 60s my wife and I drove through Santa Barbara plenty of times on the way up the coast for our northern California adventures. Our photo shoots were coordinated with our long road trips.

My brother moved his family here and we visited often. My son graduated from UCSB and that was a fun 4 years of road trips and overnights. To top off the visits to our son and my brother’s family, we usually stayed at the Holiday Inn in Goleta, a city just north of Santa Barbara, where the airport and university are located. Goleta is also the purported first location of drag racing in the USA.

In 1968, my wife and I were headed home from the Big Sur Area and it was raining lightly. By the time we got to the big bend in the freeway headed for Santa Barbara, the rain and wind were horrendous. As we approached the northern reaches of the Goleta area, the fog had rolled in and now the winds were making the fog/rain and whatever else go sideways. We could barely see out of the front window of our El Camino.

So, we gingerly pulled off of the freeway and found a small Holiday Inn in Goleta. It was just a great safety spot for several days. Over the years, it was a great place to stay. Then as we improvised our road trips to our favorite places, the Holiday Inn had closed.

The new owners made a changeover to a cool looking Kimpton Resort called Goodland. Every room and compound now has a 50-60s So Cal vibe with the added touch of a surf oriented rooms and main building. There is even a record player in each beach oriented room, with supplied or able to rent old LP Albums.

We saw and photographed this Ford Woody as it sat in the entry driveway for all to see and enjoy. Every year when we visit Santa Barbara, we stay at the Kimpton Goodland Resort and see the woody with the adjoining Airstream Trailer as part of the resort compound.

The Airstream Trailer is a part of customer service. We travelers are welcome to sit inside and spent as much time enjoying how travel used to be back in the very early days. It is a nice place to sit and enjoy a quiet place or read a good book.

  16. I can't believe I didn't post it before.........50's style beach buggy (dune buggy), with a model T trunk on the back for gear and a roll bar/rack for surfboards.

Morris minor traveler. Except that is pretty much a 50s woody wagon.

Currently just use my roadster. Can't take long boards as they stick up too high.
Used to use a model A sedan but the boards kept trying to blow off the top.
