The "first" sign wasn't "safe". It was defaced mainly by the racers who put decals all over it. They didn't enhance its beauty. Kinda like carving your initials in the park bench.

The second sign down is the old sign from the end of the road. Word was that they were saving it for the salt flats museum decals and all.
I'm thinking the top one is the sign a few hundred yards from the truck stop that almost everyone stops and takes a photo of their car by.

 

Bureau of Land Management could make themselves a few bucks if they made up 50 or so signs and sold them to the public. I'm sure there would be some interested buyers.

 

Well, at least the asshats that want to plaster the world with stickers don't have a place to put them!!!

 

It really is dopey to slap a bunch of nonsensical decals & stickers on that sign.
Then again we are in America, the home of the witless.

 

When last there in 2019 i couldn't believe how bad it looked from when i first saw it in 2016. The stickers almost covered the whole sign but it was all the bullet holes that pissed me the most. JW

How stupid crazy are people now? Teen agers breaking the windows out of our local church. They have ben replaced now. Police would not prosecute but everyone knows the individuals. While the windows were being replaced someone kicked in the basement door and stole two shop vacs. So, is nothing sacred with the younger generation? NO!

 

How do you know it was the "younger generation" ? most likely someone older who knows exactly what they have and most likely now realize they have a real cool sign they can do nothing with. JW

 

That's pitiful. If you think about it for a moment that sign is sort
of a historical landmark. Car freaks that can't make a Bonneville
week might like to take a photo while on a road trip. Here's a sign
that wasn't only at convenient height for a pic but also for foolish
vandals. Gee, what's a flat space without a Grateful Dead sticker
or a skull and crossbones?

 

It would be simple enough to cover the new sign with a high tech teflon coating that would make stickers fall off. Or station an armed guard nearby 24/7. BTW, don't expect the BLM to give a crap. It's a gubmint agency that likes big corporations who provide generous bribes, not bucks down racers.

My money is on a tree hugger or group that was pissed about the sign blocking the view.
