There was a post a couple of months ago that BLM was going to replace the sign. Government moves slow, maybe it'll be up for Speedweek.

  6. Looks like it will be here soon. It’s coming from China on a Russian freighter. They ordered it last year but the first one to arrive was misspelled.

They will probably wad it up and sell it for scrap metal and get $10 for a $500 sign.

Doubtful. Most likely a supposed gearhead who wanted something he couldn't
buy and wouldn't pay to have replicated. Check whatever classifieds you pay
attention to. Everyone want to get rich on "nostalgia" (you can see that in the
H.A.M.B. antiquated classifieds), or at least have
    something the next guy doesn't.

If it’s a car guy, and I use that term very loosely, I would guess the style of his car is extremely low, very rusty, usually with no top or if it has one it’s wide open, upholstery is a Mexican blanket, the shifter is thru the roof hole, the engine has many carbs piled on it, skinny 32” tires, construction is questionable, etc.. and not HAMB friendly. You get the picture.

I would think the old sign would be the $$$. If and when it is found I bet we'll all be surprised in who took it/has it. Just a feeling..

  19. WOW! Your way off, it was an obsessive/compulsive type. It started out with him secretly clocking all the screws…which led him to pin striping the sign and chroming the frame. He returned the next day and had it ceramic coated. After admiring his work he just couldn’t live without it. It just fit in his toy hauler behind the Escalade. ……..thieves suck no matter what the circumstances are.

Good Lord, is nothing sacred anymore?
If I were the sentencing Judge, I'd give him the max 12 months and his probation would begin with him spending speed week "guarding" the sign in the hot sun.
Wearing a shirt that says "I'm the loser that stole this sign".

The old sign is allegedly in the salt flats museum in Wendover with all the stickers and decals proudly displayed on it. At least that was where it was supposed to be headed.
The thief is probably some goombah who decided that he needed it for his man cave or shop wall and now finds that there a few thousand rather pissed folks looking for him and he can't show anyone his prize from his road trip past Bonneville.

You can't advertise it for sale because it is theft over ____ from a federal spot. Can't display it in your shop or man cave where rodders in the know will spot it.

They should replace it with a 1947 Edition

Did you stop to think it could be a tree hugger and this is their form of protest against the petrolheads who desecrate the pristine salt flats, home to an endangered ant! (My wife reckons I've got an overactive imagination).
