I just stopped at my Buddys garage and he was trying to drill a 1/4" hole in his stainless grill to mount an overflow tank. It is where the weatherstripping would cover it. He bought expensive bits that make a shiny dot. Any suggestions?
Slow and steady win the race when drill stainless steel. lots of lube, cutting fluid , oil etc to keep it cool . Heat turns stainless it something almost in-drillabe. a good sharp bit , cooling fluid of some sort , slllllooooooowwwwww and apply pressure. did I say slow ? Cause , slow !
Start with a very small pilot hole. Like 1/8" or 5/32" then step up. Don't spin the bit too fast and use lots of coolant.
Actually, 'Tap Ease' or 'Thread Ease' are the superior 'coolant' for drilling/cutting stainless. Costly, but it makes a notable difference.
