Technical Drilling a hole in Model A Grilk

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by spillaneswillys, Jun 13, 2021.

  1. I just stopped at my Buddys garage and he was trying to drill a 1/4" hole in his stainless grill to mount an overflow tank. It is where the weatherstripping would cover it. He bought expensive bits that make a shiny dot. Any suggestions?

  2. Slow and steady win the race when drill stainless steel.

lots of lube, cutting fluid , oil etc to keep it cool . Heat turns stainless it something almost in-drillabe.

a good sharp bit , cooling fluid of some sort , slllllooooooowwwwww and apply pressure.

    did I say slow ?

    Cause , slow !

I'd start with a 1/8" bit and work up. Very slow speed usually works best with stainless.

Don't think I would place an overflow tank there. How is it going to clear the hood?

  6. Start with a very small pilot hole. Like 1/8" or 5/32" then step up. Don't spin the bit too fast and use lots of coolant.

Drill a real small hole and then enlarge it with a tapered reamer.

Actually, 'Tap Ease' or 'Thread Ease' are the superior 'coolant' for drilling/cutting stainless.
Costly, but it makes a notable difference.

A good coolant and a good quality step drill should do it.

  12. Thanks for the help. He got it done by just using some oil as you guys said!
