Event Coverage Midway Drags at Mid America Dragway Coverage

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by guthriesmith, Jun 12, 2021.

  1. Went to a pretty cool event just up the road in Ark City, Kansas today with my son to see some heads-up drag racing. The event was put on by Hot Rod Sanctuary and was a 72 and older event. Lots of HAMB-friendly race cars there and also saw a few good friends. Fun day overall especially since we couldn’t make it to Indy for the CCR.

I’ll post more in the morning including the FED’s, etc.

  10. Yep, nice facility for sure. Way nicer than last time I was there several years ago. Good seeing you and Sam.

    Is this an annual event?

  12. I think it was the first one, but hope they make it annual. It wasn’t real big, but was the type of racing we all like to see and be a part of. Felt like a real small version of the HAMB drags with many of the same cars from the Midwest.

Hopefully, it wont conflict with CCR every year. That’s so close, it would be a good one to make. The only problem I see, is the pre-72 cutoff, once the word gets out, every 69 Camaro bracket car within 500 miles will show up.

  15. Love that 56! My son asked me what my favorite car was and that was it. Beautiful car and ran great too!

  16. Understood. Other than, sounds like they wouldn’t let them run anything that wasn’t pre-73 at least in appearance. So, we were talking to a guy with a 69 Cutlass that said he couldn’t run his hood scoop or Weld wheels. So, that should help keep it reasonable.

Sadly it looks like a lot of people sat on their butts at home and didn't show up from the look of the empty stands more and more strips have closed or are up for sale this last year and thats not good for the sport. I guess the Southeast Gassers have figured out how to get more spectators other strips should follow their lead, lot of nice cars showed up at your event thanks for the pictures.

I don’t know how well it was promoted. This is the first I have heard about it, I think. I have old man brain though.....

Thanks for making the time to take pics & post here - Cool

  20. Yea, ironically enough, this track shut down for a while but was fairly recently purchased by someone that has put some capital into it to make it pretty nice. I hope folks will help support it again. I do think that this event wasn’t very publicized (at least in places I see.) as Chris mentions. It was on FB and likely a few other places, but they aren’t places that I see. Anyway, maybe showing the turnout places like here will help generate more interest as well for events going forward. They really have made the facility nice. They have some nice stadium seats now that are new since I was there along with a canopy over them on the spectator side. They also have a nice air-conditioned concession area and very reasonable prices on food and beverages. I would much rather support this small track than some of the bigger ones actually.

Great looking car and a cool event.

I'm thinking that more of us on the HAMB and FB may have known about it than possible spectators within driving distance. That said, this kind of racing is usually more participant than spectator oriented from what I have seen in the past. It's what I like rather than pro cars but not what the dad with kids on dads and kids day spends money on.

  22. I would travel down for an event like that

  24. Me too! I only knew because my son saw something about it. I was happy to go since it is the same track I frequented when I was high school age into my early 20’s. My first pass on a drag strip was at MAD when I was 16. I found out what I thought was a mid-12 second car really ran 15’s... o_O

My next trip down that track was closer...13.00’s after lots of better parts. :D

Wasn’t a hamber on here talking about putting together a race? I thought it was in Missouri though.

  26. Only one I can think of is the owner of Mokan putting on the SPAM Drags the same weekend as the cancelled HAMB Drags (at least as far as one in Missouri).
