Hot Rods If you could pick a car that epitomizes the word "Hot Rod" what one car fits that bill?

"Actually Stan ( @Stan Back ) the car in your avatar cuts a pretty big slice of the "Hot Rod" pie. Just clean and as smooth as silk. I think I have seen a full size pic of it at one time or another."

Whoops -- I just reread what you you said -- Thanx! Any way, here's the story on the Al Teague photo . . .

I took the original years ago. I put it on the Bonneville Program one year and caught some shit 'cause it was taken at El Mirage. (I always put a photo on the cover from the year before, but there had been no year before.) That's what you get when you use volunteer help.

I'd originally brought Al a copy of it. And some of the crew wanted it and I gave them one or two the next month. I didn't know any of them. Years later it ended up in Rodders Journal and a couple of other publications – I don't care who or how.

If anyone wants a good digital copy, let's see if I can load this . . . (or email me if it's not big enuf).

As I child of the 50's, watching the changes in what is referred to as a HotRod, and building a few along the way, my friend Jack Greiner's 32 does it for me. A hopped up flathead, driven on the street, raced on ovals, and parked in a muddy driveway. 2013-12-19 094214.jpg 2013-12-19 094545.jpg 2013-12-19 095100.jpg

Getting it down to just one is a big ask. Here are a couple that honk my horn. There are many more...............

As usual I’m on the fringes here. This is one that I like very much. 5EE11B53-4555-4E56-9BAA-C4E7176202DD.jpeg

    Hello,

Of all the old hot rods that came into our lives over the years, there is one that stands out as outstanding. There have been plenty of hot rods from our neighborhood 1934 Ford 5 window coupe hot rod/drag racer, to the Lee Bright 1929 Sedan Delivery, but despite not actually liking the 32 roadster versus the Model A roadsters, this 1932 made a difference for me. The camaraderie of friendships, the cool look of the red 32 roadster and the feel of being on a roadster on the streets made it a memorable hot rod. A show car used for daily driving and appearances at various club events. This was a hot rod to the letter.

Jack Stewart of the L.A. Roadsters took me under his wing and showed me various aspects of early hot rods. I had my first open roadster ride in his immaculate red 1932 roadster. It was not a curvy mountain road alongside of a lake, but in a residential neighborhood with few cars. It was the feeling I got from this roadster and the way it felt going over the So Cal roads. The old “wind in your hair…” scene played on and on for many blocks.

Yes, Jack is now gone and he did get older as we all are doing, so gracefully as possible. But, this is how I remember him and his 1932 roadster. Thanks, Jack… for the experience and the cool looking hot rod… To me, it is the epitome of being a true hot rod…

Since I ended up buying the motor out of this 34 which was owned and driven by Jerry Dilbert. I think this is a pretty cool representation of a "Hot Rod". It was a record holder in its class during that late 50's era.

I have trawled thru the 11 pages and figure that most folk choose something that was at the start of their hot rod passion. So a late 60s over the top style car tends to work for me. I have a lot of time for the Phil Cool 32 roadster - I still remember when I walked (yeah) to the book store to buy a copy of Hot Rod and it was on the cover and it had slicks......

Tho it came a generation later, The Condor coupe (with slicks) screams hot rod to me.

  18. A hot- rod means street based to me, as opposed to a race car. But real hot rods confuse the roles.

  19. For me, and I would mention my definition of hotrod has been refined by my time on the hamb, it would be a street driven, early 30’s ford car, with a V8, no fenders, no whitewalls, not heavily chopped, full hood and pie crust slicks. I realize that will bring 10 different images to 10 different people, but isn’t that great?

Much could be said on this one, or should we say several...'T' track roadsters, 28-29's on 32 rails, 32's,33's,34's far toooo many choices, for me I would say whatever the guys were doing before & after the war in the back yard & under a shade tree...

  23. It's a tough one to beat for sure. If I live long enough and can get a couple of my on-hand projects done I'm going to build a Grabowsky inspired clone of it with a 392 and a quick change. It will for sure be painted 57 Dodge Royal blue with Red pleats. I love the stance and exhaust and will do my best to "get it right". I have everything it takes here in house except the TIME.

My criteria for a "real" hot rod has apparently morphed over the years.
Jakes' new car has me smitten!

Well, there are lots of cars that fit the title, but my all time favorite is the Doyle Gammel Coupe which has already been mentioned twice.

Bit I think we would be remiss if we didn't put this 55 Chevy in here as well......
